It had been another sleepless night. He hated the couch in his…their…apartment but he still couldn’t bring himself to sleep on that damn bed. Ryan had always had a strong respect for the history of an object and their bed kept screaming it’s history at him every time he looked at it.

Instead of seeing the neatly made double bed, he would see the way that Aleksei looked on it, wearing nothing but a smile, waiting for him to join him. That image was always one that made it particularly difficult for Ryan to get to sleep. On the other hand, anytime he actually managed to get to sleep on it, he would wake up the next morning with his arm flung towards the other side of the bed, reaching for someone who wasn’t there anymore. It was like he was reliving that November morning every time he woke up. While he didn't want to admit it to anyone or himself, especially himself, it was taking a lot out of him. He'd had some pretty frustrating times before he moved to Chicago but this was the first time that he had felt this kind of emotional exhaustion.

Ryan had given up trying to just get over it a month ago. As long as he was in this apartment, it just wasn’t going to happen and was tired of fighting a losing battle. Aleksie was the one who had picked out the dishes Ryan was now using. There was a shirt of Ryan's that Aleksei always stole for a couple of days that Ryan now kept shoved in the back of a drawer he never opened. Everything in this apartment reminded him of Aleksei and he just couldn’t deal anymore. He knew nothing was going to get better until he took care of what had driven Aleksei away in the first place and the only way to do that was to go back home. He couldn't say how long he was going to stay there but he knew staying in Chicago wasn't working.

His plane ticket was sitting on the kitchen counter and, with all the extra time he’d had gained while not sleeping lately, most of his things were packed. He’d already shipped a bunch of it to his parents house in Arlington, and received a screechy call from his mother as a result. You better not think that you’re living here! His dad had assured him that he could ignore his mother and stay with them as long as he needed to. It was nice of him to offer but, quite frankly, Ryan would rather rip his own eyes out than have to live any where near his mother again. He had gotten the fuck out of the house once he graduated from high school and had no intentions of ever living there again. Besides, he didn't want to cause any problems for his dad.

He had to find somewhere to stay though, and that was how he found himself calling his sister that morning. Ryan hoped that she wasn’t too pissed at him for calling so early.
