Brielle had been sprawled on her stomach on the sofa with a book, relaxing for the night for a while before she turned in. She was already in her pajamas and had her music playing quietly from her laptop on the coffee table as background noise. Her cat, Boo, decided to take advantage of the arrangement and was curled up quite comfortably atop her butt.

When her cellphone vibrated, she hesitated for a moment, not recognizing the number that popped up right away. Chewing on her lower lip, she debated silently for a heartbeat before pressing the talk button. A smile flit across her lips, however, when she recognized the voice on the other end.

"It is. Jay? Is that you?"

It was her. Good. Damn What did he say now? Her question made it a little easier for him. "It is, Miss Brielle. I told you I'd call. I hope it isn't a bad time for you?"

He'd forgotten how bad he was at this prospective dating thing. Not that he thought that this counted as that, unless she said something about it cause he wasn't making the first move. Unless this counted as the first move and damn. He needed to call Max for that sanity check ASAP.

Brielle's smile widened as she shifted to lean on her elbows, gaining her an irritated scowl from her cat at being woken. She ignored him. "No, it's not a bad time at all, I was just reading. I'm glad you called. How's your week been?" she asked him cheerfully.

She was glad he called. That might have given him warm fuzzy feelings if he was willing to admit that this was anything other than him just doing what he had said he would. This was a friendly call. Yes, friendly. So there was no need for the warm fuzzies. None whatsoever.

"It's been pretty decent so far. I hired an assistant and she's pretty awesome. Great work ethic and all that. And it's been a good week for comics. How was your week? And what are you reading?"

Because talking about other women on the phone to someone who maybe might be something if he was going to allow himself to even dream of that. But sticking to harmless questions like how are you and what are you reading should be good right?
