Slipping in and out of unconsciousness, Sheena didn't know how long she had been left hanging where she was--minutes, hours, even days could have passed, and she wouldn't have known. She did know that the maniac who had bound and gagged her had finally managed to push her past her pain tolerance, but she had still refused to scream or whimper--in ( Read more... )

Silently, Abel ghosted into the room, his eyes red as he looked around for whatever monster had left his friend here, injured and bleeding. He had caught the scent of her blood as he had wandered through the halls, and had quickly followed it here.

"Relax, Sheena, you're safe," Abel murmured. He knelt before her and cut the rope holding one leg before massaging the tight muscles to relax them. It was times like these that he wished he had some heeling magic.

Sheena sank contentedly into the robe and into his arms, resting her head on his chest as he carried her. Despite her exhaustion, she looked around for Zora as she lay upon the bed. She had just turned to Abel to ask him where the pups were when his whistle brought two bundles of black fur stampeding into the room. Sheena immediately scrambled to hug her wriggling pup, lifting him into the bed. Looking at Abel, she said, "I'm sorry I made all of you worry."

"Somehow, I don't think it was your fault that someone decided to pick on you like that," Abel murmured as Radi hopped up on the bed to snuggle close to Sheena with a worried whine. He smiled and stroked Radi's head. "Now, rest here while I get you something to nibble on and some more water."

Zora whined as well, nudging her chin with his nose. Sheena hugged both pups tightly, letting them know she was okay--physically. "Maybe not," she muttered, "but if I hadn't been afraid to summon..." She left the rest of the sentence hanging.

"Okay. I'll be good." She did as told, letting her hands roam over the pups' soft fur.

Abel shook his head and slipped into the kitchen area. He quickly sliced up almost a basket of fruit to put on a plate. Then he was returning to the bed with the plate plus a pitcher of ice water and a glass.

When he returned, she said without prompting, "I was worried that if he saw a summon, he'd copy it--abilities and all--and terrorize people even more." She looked up. "I couldn't let that happen."

Her eyes fell on the plate and grew wide. "Ummm....just how much fruit did you cut?" Zora, in the mean time, smelled the fruit and yipped, wanting some. Tilting her head, she said, "Guess which one he likes the most?"

"That is a reasonable worry," Abel remarked, putting the fruit close enough that she could eat it without stretching too much but not close enough that a certain puppy could get to it unaided. "After all, you don't know the full abilities of that person."

He chuckled. "And I cut you enough to nibble on and fill up."

She nodded. "I still don't know if he copied Zelos' abilities, too. I do know one thing, though. He doesn't know my name." She laughed as Zora harrumphed and lay beside her when he realized he couldn't reach the fruit.

She picked up a slice of apple and popped it in her mouth. "It's probably more than enough. Have some," she offered Abel.

"So that's why you relaxed after I called you by name," Abel remarked, sitting on the bed next to her. "You knew I wasn't him in a different form."

He picked up a bit of apple and nibbled on it, more to keep her company than to really eat anything. "And that's probably a very smart deciscion to make. If you don't know what a person can do, play dumb until you find out."

She nodded. "That was the only thing I had to go on. That, and if you mentioned anything that only you would know. But, a person's name is usually the first thing said in that type of situation."

She chuckled. "First rule of any battle: 'Always assess your opponent's weaknesses and strengths.'" Her tone suggested it was something she had been taught. Unfortunately, she hadn't learned his weaknesses, but she had learned to run if she encountered him again.
