Character History and Background:
History BCE: Methos' earliest life is something of a mystery even to him. The figure of 5,000 for his age is his own approximation based on how far back his memory stretches. In Methos mortal life he was one of five children. He had two brothers and two sisters. Methos died for the very first time in a sandstorm that wiped out his entire family. It wasn't until many years after that first death he would finally meet another Immortal who would take him under their wing. That man was a Pharaoh named Djer. Though the Pharaoh thought to make him his student he didn't realize Methos' plans. Djer had killed his wife, for that he was buried alive in a sarcophagus.
Centuries passed before Methos took his first head, more passed before he joined with Kronos, Silas, and Caspain as one of the Four Horsemen. They murdered, raped, and pillaged their way across two continents. Much of what the Horsemen did is known only from them, but there is one survivor of their raids who still lives to give her account, Cassandra. She was their prisoner for a time, then escaped from their camp. Methos didn't follow her as soon as she escaped from them. For many centuries he'd spend time with the Horsemen, and leave them only to find himself reunited with them once again. Only at the dawn of the Common Era did he finally leave them for good.
History CE: In 34 or 35 CE Methos was a slave in the household of the Roman Senator Valerius Petronius. The Senator's wife Druscilla the Emasculator didn't take Methos turning down her advances at all well. She accused him of rape getting him crucified for the crime. Contrary to what one might think it did a number of good things for Methos. It taught him to stay out of politics, it taught him to never get between a married couple, and it brought about his introduction to the Immortal Marcus Constantine. Marcus heard of his plight, and rescued him from the cross before he died too many times. Marcus rescued him only knowing him as the slave Remus.
Methos majored in medicine and dueling at the University of Heidelberg in 1453. While it isn't known what he used for an alias then it is known he would practice medicine again. In 1808 he was Doctor Benjamin Adams seeing to slaves in New Orleans. While Captain Morgan Walker chased him out of the New World, he continued to be Doctor Benjamin Adams in the Old World, serving as George Gordon Byron's personal physician and mentor in 1816. Lord Byron's Watcher Dora Rossi thought Methos was a lover to Mary Shelley and Lord Byron. Methos had some consideration for decency. He also had some feelings for Byron besides those for an employer or student.
Pre-Gamma Site: After years of working for the Watchers, Methos' having played a part in Jacob Galati's death left him feeling lost. For a while he simply wandered the world, or at least Tibet, but he had all the enlightenment he could use and returned to his friends. While Methos was spending time with Duncan MacLeod and Joe Dawson, Byron crossed their paths. He came into conflict with Duncan, and as much as Methos tried to prevent a fight between them Byron lost his head. Though he resisted standing between them, once Byron lost the fight Methos felt drawn to do something in his memory. Methos again became a doctor, Doctor Adam Pierson.
Post-Gamma Site: When Doctor Adam Pierson was first brought to the Gamma Site it was for his medical skills. He didn't immediately inform anyone of how deep or varied his knowledge was. Slowly, as he took up beekeeping and brewing, some began to see that the doctor had other skills. After Gamma Site was cut off from Earth and the gate buried under the meteor strike he informed a select few people in charge of his knowledge covering a great deal more than he let on. While he's been willing to help with the knowledge he's collected over millennia the main thing he enjoys besides his work as a doctor and a good drink is tending to the horses at the site.
Background:Methos is an Immortal, the mythical oldest Immortal to some. As an Immortal he doesn't age, he's immune to disease, and he heals quickly from most injuries including a number of fatal ones. The one way to kill an Immortal permanently is by beheading. Methos enjoys being only a myth as much as he can because all Immortals are part of the Game. Each one seeks to be the last surviving Immortal so they can claim the Prize. There are rules to the Game -- "Never fight on Holy Ground," "Always fight one-on-one," but the first rule is, "There can be only one." Because the way to kill an Immortal is by beheading, most Immortals carry a sword.
A POV Snippet: Methos closely watched the young girl take her first ride on a pony. She was old enough, no matter what, she'd grow up with some memories of Earth. For the children born at Gamma Site it was harder to say what they might know of the world their parents had come from one day. Communication with Earth was lost, and the most likely reason for it was that it was destroyed. He'd long believed the knowledge he possessed was worth protecting -- known he remembered things lost to the passage of time. Now Methos not only held memories from the distant past that were his alone, he remembered modern things that simply weren't in the colony's little library.
Methos called out a correction to her posture, and the girl corrected how she sat the pony. He smiled. Methos had known he was going to be needed at the Gamma Site since they first asked him to come. Then, they had approach him as a doctor, talking about how small the colony would be, and how far away. Methos had liked the idea of getting so far way. Once he had a clearer picture of just how things were at the colony he'd begun to learn other ways it needed him. Methos had taken great delight in setting about making beer on their new world. It was always good to have around. What he really enjoyed was the horses. Methos found they didn't just bring back bad memories.
It felt good to brush out their coats. Being surrounded by them made him feel home in ways he hadn't in a very long time. Methos wondered for a moment if the closeness he felt to them was entirely his own or if there was some part of Silas in him that came forward while he was with them. The giant wouldn't mind watching the little girl take her first ride. He'd felt women and children had their place. Of course Silas would prefer to be out in the explorers' camp looking for knew challenges to test his strength against. Methos was content looking after the little girl, the pony she rode, and the people at Gamma Site that needed every bit of knowledge he could give to them.
