Character History and Background:
New York can be a dangerous place, if you don't know what you're doing. Doubly-so the dark streets of Brooklyn.
Jason started life in a family that was descended from Irish immigrants, but his parents should never have been allowed to start a familiy. It didn't take long until Jason and his brother Richard were sent up for adoption.
Sadly, they were split up at a young age and now Jason has lost touch with anyone that is related to him by blood.
A succession of foster homes, orphanages and other unsavoury residences left Jason a very angry young man, unable to relate to people, more likely to knife a man for ten bucks, just so he could have a hot meal as he lived mostly off the streets.
A new social worker was assigned to him, a man who was trained to deal with the hardest of cases. It took a long time for Jason to trust this man, but eventually they formed a friendship, just as Jason was homed in a good home. Stephen Paris was trained in the psychology of violence and of gangs. He knew that kids like Jason, now aged 17, had little outlook in life, unless someone showed them new ways.
Stephen was also a firm believer in the practise of martal arts as a form of discipline. It also helps calm the mind. All of these tennets helped Jason to calm down and by the age of 18, Jason was scoring top marks in his SAT's and college board exams. His hero, Stephen, did all he could to encourage the young man, helping him where necessary.
It was a freak twist of fate that led Stephen to the point of a knife and the end of his life.
Jason was devestated.
But instead of returning to his own gang ways, he found another way of repaying Stephen. He turned his formidable intellect towards furthering the man's legacy.
Within four years, he was a qualified psychologist, working to help the young kids on the streets of New York; repaying Stephen by carrying on in his footsteps.
At the age of 26, his skills as a psychologist were in heavy demand, but it was for his martial arts skills that he came to the fore, as he celebrated being the youngest adult world champion of tae kwon do, outdoing even masters three dans above him.
It didn't take much longer for him to acquire those three dans, to make him the youngest adult 7th dan master in the US. A title of which he was immensely proud and dedicated to the memory of the only man who'd even given him a chance.
Then came the lottery.
Jason was automatically selected, being as intelligent as he was, the airforce made it a priority to get a good team of psychologists on board. But for the airforce, it was an added benefit that Jason could fight. He was assigned to the site, as part of the admin team, but
had already proven that he was a good instructor and thus became responsible for mental and physical health of any who wanted to come to him.
A POV Snippet: (Set just after arrival, before the disaster strikes)
A sunset is a beautiful thing, especially if you haven't seen a proper one before.
Jason glanced back at the makeshift tent that would be his home, until a new one could be built. He turned his eyes back to the magnificent reds and crimsons of the sunset, revelling in the fact that there were no street lights to ruin the view.
His bunk mates were all muttering in the tent behind him, arguing over who got the best cots. Jason didn't mind, he'd take whichever was left.
"Doctor, can I talk to you, please?"
He turned, looking into the blue eyes of the young teenager who approached. A soft smile touched his lips and he gestured to the large expanse of rock beside him. "It's Jason, and you're welcome to..."
"Thank you." They sat in silence, while Jason let the girl gather her thoughts. "Earth's so far away and I couldn't sleep..."
He nodded to her to go on. Sometimes just talking things over helped, and Jason was more than willing to listen, into the night, if needed.
The sunset blazed overhead and he could be a companion to someone who needed him.
Life was kind.
