John smiled. "I hear that," he agreed. He'd spent plenty of time living in isolated locations with survivalists, criminals, misanthropes--anyone who had something to teach that his mother needed to learn. Or that she wanted John to learn. He'd also lived in a number of big cities along the way. Paradoxically, it was easier to hide out in a city of millions than in remote locations most of the time ( ... )

Chloe didn't jump when Faith appeared out of nowhere only because of long practice. Fast as she was Faith had nothing on Clark, who could appear literally right in front of her in a flash--or vanish just as quickly. When you'd learned not to start and spill hot coffee on yourself at that, Faith's sudden appearance was easy to handle.

"Now why doesn't that surprise me?" Chloe said. She looked at Xander, then. "My, you're popular tonight!"

Xander acknowledged her words with a look. "It's a gift," he said modestly.

"Yeah, well," Chloe replied. "It's been a long day and I'm tired. So I think I'm going to turn in." She'd intended to share Xander's bed tonight, and maybe Faith's depending on where she ended up. You never knew with Faith. But the parade of visitors had changed her mind.

Unless things settled down soon, she'd go back to the tent she shared with Cassandra. "What about you?" Chloe asked, turning to Xander.

While the appearance of Faith didn't necessarily surprise Jon, he'd heard the shuffling, had seen the movement out of the corner of his eye, Xander's jumping did. After a brief second's thought, however, he realized it shouldn't have-- peripheral vision must be a bitch with only one eye.

It wasn't Faith's appearance that had made the decision for Jon to head off, no. Chloe was tired, and the fact that she'd asked Xander what his plans were (he wasn't stupid!) did. He cleared his throat, took a step back, and offered the man a tight-lipped smile, addressing him first. "Yeah, we'll do that." Then, it was to the rest, his regard moving from Chloe to Faith, and he rolled his head back slightly. "Good night, all," was offered before another step back was taken, and finally turned and headed away, undoubtedly towards his tent that he still shared with Calvin.

Good nights and good-byes were exchanged, and Xander watched the not-young man depart before turning to his companions.

"Faith," Xander warned in low tones before the Slayer even half-turned in Jon's direction. "I think that the man has had enough weirdness for one day, why don't you let him soak it in before messing with him?"

Faith's entire body sighed with mock-disappointment. "You do know how to ruin a girl's fun, Xan."

Xander's brows rose. "Nice try, but I know you better. There's not a whole lot that can ruin your fun." While Faith laughed her agreement, Xander turned his attention to Chloe. "In answer to your question, I was thinking about going to bed. That's bed, not sleep. And if you're not up on subtle tonight, I can deliver a very ham-fisted invitation to sex and carnal pleasure."

One thing he could say about the time spent in a relationship with Anya, and too many years in whatever he had with Faith: Xander had stepped outside the mold and wasn't shy about communicating his desires.
