"Morning," Trent said cheerfully. True to habit, he'd taken a morning walk prior to coming to work. He caried his sketchpad with him. "New folk?"

She had to be; he might not know who everybody was, but he was pretty sure he hadn't seen her before. Plus, this was near the new tents he had helped with the night before.

"Good morning," Jade replied, studying the young man who had greeted her. He carried a sketchpad and seemed quite cheerful. She gave him a smile, momentarily wishing she was a bit younger, or he was a bit older... that jaw would have attracted her on an older man.

"Yes," she said, "I'm from Tau. I imagine you heard about our arrival during the night. That siren that was going off when we came through the gate must have woken you up." She held out a hand. "My name's Jade. Jade Weston."

"Hi, Jade," Trent said. "Yeah, I was up and helping putting up tents. Are you okay?"

"Yes, yes," Jade said, deliberately smothering the memories of Tau which flooded to the surface any time somebody threatened to ask her that question. How could she possibly be okay after losing two homes in such quick succession? "I'll be fine."

And she would be, especially with other Tomorrow People here. She noted that the man hadn't offered his name in response to her own, and wondered why.

The temptation suddenly seized her to teleport away, somewhere quiet, and break down and cry for those two lost homes. She resisted the urge, as she'd resisted countless times the inclination to just disappear and go somewhere nicer - at school, in exam rooms, during her PhD viva... none of them would have been very good places to disappear from.

She carried on walking, acting like she knew where she was going, then the memory struck her from last night.

"Do you know where Dr Jason Maguire's office is?"

Cassie had made her assurances, offered a 'good luck', complete with a brief nudge of confidence, and had gestured with her head in the direction once more before continuing with her 'welcome wagon' job ( ... )

Coffee cup in hand, Jade strode confidently up to the marines who guarded the gate area. Not the tallest of women, she smiled up at them and received cautiously businesslike looks in return, just like she had at Stargate Command and Area 51. These were soldiers doing their jobs properly, and she couldn't blame them for that, but talking her way past them always seemed like a waste of time ( ... )

The marines watched her approach, just as they'd watched everything else in the area, including the 'interior' gate area. As Jade stopped and spoke, a couple of them turned to listen, and undoubtedly, a quick 'threat assessment' scan was done. After all, the stargate was the main way on and off the planet... and they'd spent the better part of months digging it free from the meteor-strikes on the world ( ... )

"General O'Neill," Jade said in return. "I was provided with coffee and doughnuts by a woman of your acquaintance called Cassandra. She was delivering a big batch over to the medical staff, I believe." She smiled and sipped her coffee, revealing in the angle she tilted it to that she'd nearly drunk it all.

"I must say that a bit of caffeine this morning has been a necessity. Sleep wasn't exactly restful, although I slept more last night than any night since the attack. Here, there's a sense of safety like we used to have on Tau." She grinned. "Even if the beds aren't as comfortable.

"As to why I'm here... I heard that a team went through the gate to Tau this morning. I wondered if you had included anybody familiar with the area in their number."

The mug of coffee in his hand fell to the floor as Jason stared at the figure that had just... appeared...

"Uhhh..." he managed, but that was about the maximum coherence he could muster.

"You dropped your coffee," Jade managed to say, surprising herself by her poise. She had not been expecting to find somebody in her tent when she appeared. In fact, she couldn't remember ever doing this before. She supposed she must have been lucky - or perhaps less eager to show off. Ami would probably be furious.

Pointing at the remains of Jason's coffee, Jade realised she didn't care. It was her decision. But perhaps tying her announcement to being a friend of Ami's hadn't been so wise.

No point crying over spilt coffee, though. She bent down and picked up the cup.

"Nothing left," she commiserated. "What brings you here?" She looked around and saw the tent was empty apart from the two of them. "Did you come to see Emma?"

"You.. buh.. I..." Jason stopped and only then realised his hand was burning a little "AH!" He shook the hand, puffing breath to try and cool it down. "Water... need water... Cold"

He was well aware that his words were hardly coherent, but he hoped that Jade could understand him.

"Oh! Your hand!" Jade said. She grabbed Jason by his other hand and dragged him out of the tent towards the washing facilities she'd discovered earlier. "There's cold water over here, come on."

Once they got there, she plunged his hand into a basin of ice cold water and held it there.

"Ten minutes," she said. "I think that's how long you're supposed to cool a burn for anyway. Got to get all the heat out before it does any more damage."
