"Here you go, Dr. Jackson," Mike Flanagan said, placing the mead in front of her. "One mead. It's not authentic English ale, but...."

"It's fine," Dr. Jackson said.

"Better than you'd expect from a place called Moe's, I guess," Mike said. He shook his head ruefully. "Moe's."

"That wasn't your first choice, I take it?"

Mike shook his head. "No. I was thinking of the White Hart, like the bar in stories Arthur C. Clarke wrote. Or maybe Callahan's Place, from the Spider Robinson stories." He sighed theatrically. "But General O'Neill dubbed it Moe's--and it stuck."

"Well, it's your bar--isn't it ( ... )

Ami gave Valerie a sympathetic smile and sipped the mead. It actually wasn't half bad. She understood Valerie's chagrin at calling Warren a geek, but everyone did it. Of course, a good lot of the populace probably also called Ami and Valerie geeks so it was all a matter of perspective.

But really, they were. Geeks. The lab techs that was, a vast majority of them. The sort of boys that one always assumed would grow up to live in their mother's basements and masturbate to internet porn. (Ouch, harsh there, Ami. Are you sure there isn't some extra kick to that mead?)

Warren Mears was the most social of his department. The poor guy actually went out of his way to talk to people, and he did sometimes show up at social functions and in social places, like Moe's. He wasn't a bad bloke ... just a certified card-carrying, pocket protector wearing geek.

"Well, you're out tonight," Ami pointed out, "So there's something. Place isn't lively yet, but just give it another hour. Do you play billards? Pool? Darts?"

"I'm not sure," Valerie said. "I play pool--I think. I've never been sure of what the difference is between billiards and pool."

"Me neither," Mike said.

Valerie smiled at him. She didn't believe him for a minute, but it was nice that he didn't leave her alone in her ignorance. He was actually kind of cute, now that she was taking a look at him. Taller than she was--but who wasn't, really? He seemed in good shape. Sleep blue eyes ("bedroom eyes" her mother would have called them on some old-timey movie star she liked), dark unruly hair that looked like it had never seen a comb. But on him it worked somehow.

"Shall we play?" Ami asked.

"Sure," Valerie said.

OOC: Mike looks suspiciously like Joe Flanagan (aka Major Shepard on SGA), but not like a twin. Maybe a brother; I'm using him as my mental model for Mike, but he's not going to startle Teyla or Carter....

The lack of a crowd at Moe's meant that she and Valerie got first pick of the pool tables, both of them. Which wasn't to imply that only two pool tables were a bad thing, it was more than anyone expected actually. The tables were hand crafted, built from wood grown and harvested right here on Gamma Site, and somehow that made them special ( ... )

After getting tossed around by training with Teyla and Vivian Darien wanted a beer. More like needed a beer. Or three.

With his hair still damp from showering and wearing a clean T-shirt and carpenter pants, Darien strode into Moe's. He took his time making his way to the bar. The place was filling up, and the view around the pool tables was spectacular.

Darien took one of the open stools at the bar. "Hey Mike," he greeted. Although he wasn't a regular, Darien knew the bartender's name. "Whatcha got food-wise to go with your fine beer?"

"A juicy t-bone steak and crispy steak fries sound good?" Mike asked, gazing across the bar at Vivian as she leaned over to take the break shot in a new game. She looked awfully good from his angle in those jeans ( ... )

"But have you ever considered -"

"No, I have not." For the first time in the last twenty minutes, Teyla's tones rose a bit, her words sharp and crisp. The woman walking beside her, drew a breath and Teyla moderated her pitch despite the impatience clawing away at her. She gave the woman a gentle smile, "As much as I appreciate all of your -- beauty advice Cynthia, I am not currently interested in testing a … new line of herbal and botanical hair care products ( ... )

"Good evening, Teyla," Mike said. "And beer it is." He poured one and placed it in front of her.

He didn't get a chance to chat with her. She turned out to be the leading edge of a rush. Mike got busy taking drink orders and producing them. One of the spectators at the back of the bar, Roy, walked up with an empty glass. "Coming through!" he said. "Man on a mission!"

"Yeah?"

"The blonde babe wants another beer, man," Roy said with a grin.

"Well, alrighty then," Mike said. He took the glass, filled it and handed it back. "Here you go."

"Thanks, man," Roy said. He headed back.

[O'Neill] Pool - Jack v. Ami lost_mckay April 29 2008, 20:03:12 UTC
As Ami passed her empty towards Jack, he offered an 'Ah--' and turned slightly just as Matt leaned in for the 'catch'. This allowed the off-duty general to retake his own glass and take another draught from it.. almost emptying it, but not quite. Another swallow, however..

"Yeah, yeah.." Beat. "Not making any promises." Pool wasn't 'his' game, not by a long-shot. Could he hold his own? Sure. But this really wasn't a serious competition. He could talk a good game, sure. Make comments, absolutely.

"See, that tells me that your priorities are really screwed up. It's a beer," he deadpanned, though it was more than obvious that he was picking on her. Jack stepped forward again, pool cue in one hand, his glass in the other. It was a single swallow (with a flourish) that finished it, dark eyes on the archaeologist (to make the point) before he twisted around to put it down, . He'd get a refill when Matt got back and could 'guard' the table.

"I'll let you break. Ladies first.. and all that."

Ami gave Matt a gracious smile, followed with, "Ta muchly," as the man stepped in and offered to get her a refill. That was nearly immediately followed by a bit of feigned indignation and a wink of her own, "No chance of me sharking. I've nothing up my sleeve. No secret plays here ( ... )

"Yeah. No sleeves. Kinda kills that idea." Jack settled and leaned on his cue, allowing his eyes to scan the room while he waited. His attention moved back to the table, however, and he smiled slightly, though the amusement did touch dark eyes. "Or a woman and her best friend, you mean." He paused, "Chocolate counts ( ... )

Jack was trying to 'psych' her out. Ami could tell from the casual air of the question he asked, followed up with the confident smugness that accompanied his first shot. If he thought she could be shaken that easily, he had another think coming ( ... )
