If someone had told Chuck two years ago that he'd eventually be celebrating his one year anniversary with Sarah, he might have told them they were crazy.

Not that he hadn't hoped that one day that would be the case, but for a long time, all of this seemed so far-fetched. The beautiful woman of his dreams actually felt the same way about him that ( Read more... )

The date hadn't escaped Sarah's notice, but truth be told, she had no real idea what to expect from the day. There were things she knew were customary for couples, but there was a difference between knowing what was conventional and knowing how it would work for her, for Chuck.

In this case, at least, she couldn't mind not knowing. It was enough to realize she'd been with Chuck a year; after she'd tried so hard for so long to ignore the way she felt, a whole year had come and gone. Everything else, she'd just wait and see. At the sound of a knock on the door, she smoothed a hand over her side, taking a quick glance down at herself, then headed over to open it. "Hey." Smiling, she leaned in to give him a quick kiss before she noticed the flowers. "Gardenias! Chuck, they're beautiful."

"I seem to remember something about them being your favorite," Chuck said, a sly smile on his face. He'd done a lot of looking through books on flowers and searching for the right type, but the look on Sarah's face had been more than worth the trouble.

Having a spy for a girlfriend meant that he never really knew whether or not his surprises would actually be surprises when the time came, but it was always fun to give it a try anyway.

Information might have been Chuck's stock in trade, but it never failed to move Sarah, knowing he remembered these things about her. "They are," she said, "thank you. I'll just..."

Taking them, she took a minute to close her eyes and hold them up to smell. There weren't many places she could put them and she finally settled on leaving them on her nightstand, knowing she could find a proper place later, before crossing back to his side. Reaching for his hand, charm bracelet knocking against her palm, she smiled. "So how should we celebrate?"

"I have a few ideas," Chuck said, taking her hand. He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek as he started to lead her towards where he'd set up the picnic on the beach.

This was one of those times that he almost wished that they were back at home. At least then, he would have been able to do more for Sarah than just flowers and Italian food.
