DISCUSSION PROMPT #54: WHEN DOES THE HOST TAKE PLACE?

Apr 30, 2010 21:16

I know we don't really do weekly discussions anymore, but just ignore what the tag says :P

Simple question: When do you think "The Host" takes place? Do you think it is supposed to take place during 2008 (when the novel came out) or farther in the future? If the latter, how much farther?

I had a hard time placing the time line. Especially because sometimes it sounded like the souls had been on earth for a long time but Jamie was so young, it didn't always match up in my mind. I guess it just took them a long time to settle before becoming completely public.

I think it took place in the future, but not by long. Late 2010's maybe.

I didn't think it was that much farther in the future, especially since they still had products like ~cheetos around, haha.

SMeyer didn't really make any specific references that would give us an exact year or range of years, but I think it's safe to say that it's 2005-2010ish or possibly a few years after that. The human technology wasn't any more crazily advanced than it is now, so I think when we are reading it, we're supposed to think that it could happen/is happening NOW, lol.

i think it takes place present day because they don't seem to reference anything that is rare/new to us right now.

oh and Wanderer uses a desktop to send emails, so yeah I think it's definitely now-ish.

I say 2014-2020ish.
(But I totally blame Supernatural for that, with the season 5 episode The End)

Yeah, this is kind of what I'm thinking.

I agree with the slight future, but not far sentiment.
