DISCUSSION POST #48: Kyle's Tribunal

Nov 13, 2009 15:00

Do you think Kyle deserved to die for trying to throw Wanderer into the river? If you were in Wanderer's position, would you have let him live or would you have wanted him to face the consequences of his actions?

I love Kyle, so I'm going to say no. But I probably would've tried to get as far away from him as possible

Haha, that's my answer too :D
Idk WHY I like Kyle as a character since he's such an ass for most of the book, but I think it's because we see him change at the end?

I didn't like him until he changed! I thought it was so cute when he was all protective over Jodi/Sunny. I wish I had a Kyle/Sunny icon =/

He was cute with Sunny. I loved that he held on to her cryotank while looking over Jodi. "She was so sweet and sad."

It could go either way for me. Though, I'd fear the consequence of further being looked down upon by the rest of the colony for allowing Kyle to die.

If I was in Wanderer's place, the only reason I would want to help him out of the river is because I'd hate to see anyone die, even if they hated me and I hated/feared them.

I can see your point with other cave members. The cave humans see the Souls as killers so they see Wanderer as one. She's spent all this time trying to convince them she's not (even if she's not doing anything consciously to try to change their minds). If Kyle was killed because of what he did to Wanda, it would undo any good she had done and she would just become a killer in all their eyes again.

The fact that I've been watching crime shows today is probably coloring my answer. Anyway, even though it was premeditated, it only wound up being attempted murder, so the death penalty seems kind of harsh.

At the same time though, I understand how these humans living on the brink don't have much choice. I mean, Mel got off lucky with Wanderer but since after her the Souls decided to take a fiercer tact against the humans, there's only a very tiny chance that Kyle would be able to escape and not give away the location of the caves. That would kill everyone, so obviously that makes his crime and punishment way more serious. (Sorry, stating the obvious.)

Anyway, there needs to be punishments for actions in this cave society, no matter how severe they seem to us. (Normally I think some time in prison would suffice for Kyle.) Considering the sort of post-apocalyptic situation the humans are living in I don't think I would have a big problem voting for Kyle's execution ( ... )

Haha I love the influence of Crime Shows on your answer.

Overall I agree with you, though I would be terrified of Kyle - I don't know if I could take being responsible for voting to end his life.

Hmm well I would be pretty creeped out by Kyle but I don't think I could ever want him to die for what he did. I WOULD like to see some form of punishment inflicted on him. I would need justice, after all. The man tried to kill me! I don't know what his punishment would be, though... I say stuff him in that crammed little hole in the wall that Wanderer was stuck in for half the book. Hehe.
