Discussion Prompt #47: Melanie's Inner Voice

Nov 06, 2009 20:26

As we all know, for the majority of the book/movie Melanie has her voice box being used by Wanderer to converse with the external world, while Melanie also has an internal voice she uses to speak to Wanderer. In addition, Wanderer also has an internal voice that she uses to speak to Melanie. That's three voices ( Read more... )

OOh good question. I think we brought it up in a spam post last month. I wasn't sure then and I'm really not sure now. I want to say that it should be ONE actress for the voice (so whoever is playing Melanie would voice all 3). It makes sense for Melanie's inner thoughts voice and the voice of Melanie's host (whether it be Melanie or Wanderer in control) to be in the same voice. ...And I guess because Wanderer is IN Mel's head, her inner thoughts could be in the voice of Melanie too. But then that would mean that whoever plays Melanie would also be playing Wanderer ...I'm definitely interested to see how they go about this....!

oh. I didn't think of that. That does make more sense. I think it could get a little confusing though. Maybe then Melanie's inner voice should be the same as when Wanda is talking [in her body] and then Wanda should have a different internal voice.

YES. Different internal voice for Wanderer. I don't know why that didn't register in my head that it would work o_O

I think my brain stopped working and blocked it out, because we've even talked about this before too in SPAM, haven't we??

I don't remember this in spam... and I'm usually there, but I could have missed something.

Hmmm I think that they should use two different actresses to portay Wanda's voice and Mel's voice. That way they really do feel like two different people in one body. I don't want to be confused.

Yeah, if there was one voice for everyone, it'd seem more like Wanda was insane, having internal conversations with herself. Or maybe Mel's voice won't even be there. Like, it'd be like from Ian or Jared's POV. How they communicate with Mel, I mean. Like Wanda voices what Mel's thinking.

...I feel like I'm not making sense.

Haha, see it gets confusing! I need more than one actress talking.

yeah, it'd seem like she's talking to herself the whole movie. Confusing for those who haven't read.

This is what's going to be hard to get in the movie, I think. Especially for those who haven't read the book. I think Melanie should have one voice and Wanda should have one voice. Separate actresses. And then I guess once Melanie's herself, she'll keep the voice. That seems like least confusing. But then, Wanda should have that "echoey" quality when she's talking to Melanie. And Melanie should have the quality when talking until she's in her own body again.

Does that make any sense? It made sense in my head. =/

WAIT. That makes TONS of sense. Wanderer could totally have her own voice. It's just like how Kristen Bell plays the "voice" of Gossip Girl. Someone could play only the "voice" of Wanderer (and hey, it could totally be KBell for that too ;P)

Oh, it'd be awesome if KBell was on the movie :D
*jumps up and down in anticipation for casting*

Hmm I definitely think 2 actresses voices. One Melanie's voice - the same as the actress playing Mel.

She can use a different tone for when Wanderer's "words" or soul-like phrases are said.

When they have conversations I think there should be almost like a muted , echo to their voices talking back and forth.

And obviously when she takes in Pet's body, her voice takes on that body's voice chords, yet it's still Wanderer's words and phrases and mannerisms to her speech.

Does that make sense? I can re-explain

Yeah it makes sense. Like the intonation would be different when it's Wanderer. I imagine her to be more flowy and calm when she's talking, as well.

And yeah, they could totally do an echo-y thing when it's in her head.

OKAY I changed my answer because as it would turn out, I neglected to remember some stuff from before.

Basically what my fellow Host girls are saying above:

1 actress for Wanderer's "inner voice"
1 actress for Melanie's inner voice and Melanie/Wanderer's speaking voice, but depending on who is in control of the body, the intonation and mannerisms would change.

And like I said above to purple_flow: they could cast someone for a "voice-only" role, like KBell on Gossip Girl or Bob Saget on HIMYM ;)

I should go into more detail, but I can't atm, but I think this is my general answer also. (I asked because I'm not really sure what's best though.)

It's not easy but I really like the responses from everyone! :)
