If Michael Fassbender is unavailable, or if they're looking for a less traditionally handsome actor, I have a feeling that Ben Whishaw, opposite James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), would be a good pick for Erik Lehnsherr. And he's already worked with the director of X-Men: First Class, Matthew Vaughn, before in Layer Cake. You might also know him from ( Read more... )

I actually don't think Ben would sign up for a movie of this sort (unless Matthew Vaughn was very persuasive, and they had a good time working together previously on Layer Cake).

His name kind of just occurred to me because I was thinking what an odd choice McAvoy was to play Xavier, because he tends to play these likeable, "every man" roles, and (the older) Charles is the polar opposite of that. So whoever they cast as Magneto could be equally unexpected; maybe someone not physically imposing, with an incongruous gentleness...

And I think physically, the two actors would also have to be similar (in height, age, charisma), but they would also have to strike a specific, and instantaneous kind of chemistry...which, for all intents and purposes, is romantic as well as intellectual. They are the Dumbledore and Grindelwald of comicbook movie canon. :)

I'm glad to hear Singer's back on board.

(I've heard it said that the first two X-Men movies were like chess, while the third - Singerless - was more like monster trucks; so this is a good return)

this photo does indeed bear a resembalance to Magneto.

(Just as producer, but if X-Men 3 and Wolverine are any sign of how bad the franchise is without him, that's still a good thing.)
