Written because...as fun as the OT3 stuff in White Collar is, the story I wish would be written in that fandom is a backstory for Neal, one that looks at his romance with old Hollywood and the ratpack, and acknowledges his place as a Gatsby-esque character, who aspires to a life surrounded by beauty, comfort, and love

Actually, that was my initial idea for the drabble, that Eric would react like: "You are a CHILD, you don't know what you want. Come back in 10 years, if you still feel the same, and we'll see about turning you."

And of course ten years later Neal is probably in prison. :)

That's just my personal canon talking. But it makes sense to me that a con artist would change his name early in his career, if nothing else, to keep his personal history safe.
