Thinking out loud.

Could Generation Kill be what finally gets David Simon and Ed Burns an Emmy or Golden Globe nomination - or even, dare I say, a win? HBO has usually dominated the miniseries/TV movie categories in the past. Maybe Generation Kill will be the success at the awards that The Wire never was during its five season run.

Let's compare:

I am not sure it will. All the movies, etc. on this subject have tanked in the US. Audiences just don't want to watch this as "entertainment". I wonder how many people are even watching GK on HBO - I doubt it's a ratings grabber for them.

And the Emmy voters always seem to go for the Shiny Thing.

A pity because GK is excellent.

I'd love to compare the viewer numbers for John Adams with GK. John Adams got 5 Emmy nominations, all in acting categories. GK doesn't have any well known faces or clear leading roles in its cast, but I think technically at least it should get recognised.

I am so over looking to the Emmys for a little reputability. But awards do receive a level of awareness that universal critical acclaim never seems to grant, and I would like to see Simon/Burns working at the best level that they can be.

I am not sure how these things work , but I am pretty sure I would love it to happen.

I am already loving this show .. gasp .. more than "The Wire". I guess mostly because though I think "The Wire" is an exceptional show and I love many characters, I am not really in love with any of them. But "Generation Kill" - I am CRAZY about Brad, Lieutenant and Doc.

I have even been reading jacob's recaps on TWOP. The man rambles too much and gives us too much info about his personal life, but I Crave "Generation Kill" talk.

I wonder if there is something about Doc being a Navy corpsman, and not technically a marine, that gives him a certain license to criticise them. An ability to step back and disengage at a certain level, whether it be from their actions or from their command structure, that Nate Fick or even Espera just cannot allow themselves to do because of their own responsibilities.

Jacob takes his job way too seriously for many people's liking, but when it's BSG or Generation Kill that he's electing to write a 30-page recap on (instead of, say, Gossip Girl), I don't really mind. You'd think fandom would have trained us to be more charitable towards pretentiousness. If I wanted a real recap, I'd go to TVSquad.com.
