I have seen the pilot for CBS' new procedural The Mentalist. I LOVED IT.

I just wish the word "Mentalist" wasn't Brit slang for someone who's completely lost the plot. *g*

I've never heard that. :) Is it like how "mental" is slang for "nutty"?

Yep. "Are you MENtal?" is often heard on Brit TV soaps etc.

If you peel back the layers, or even peer into his subconscious, all you'll find is...more House. Patrick Jane on the other hand is like a series of Chinese boxes so tightly locked, you'll doubt if there's anything at the centre of it.

Very astute of you. I like your description better than the actual episode.

I thought the episode was well made, and I really liked the character Baker was portraying - liked as in "was very intrigued by". I think it's brave putting such a seriously disturbed character in the centre of a procedural drama. TheFutonCritic even mentioned Jim Profit in their review.

...okay, now I have to try it. I will never stop mourning for Profit.

It's too bad that they've come up with such a stupid name for the series--I would try it out if you said is was okay (*eg*), but most of friends have made fun of the name at one point or another.

It is an extremely unfortunate name. *g* But I have a feeling that you'd like the show.

Mentalist implies all the wrong thing. *eg* :) But I rely on you to point me in the right direction! (It's your job to watch all of the poorly named series.)

Touching Evil...hmmm, yes. There are definite similarities, although I've only seen the US version.
