Those are some very good points, and can definately see the similarities.

I loved Rome just as much as I loved the State Within, and I can't wait for them both to come back on our screens.

I have plenty of people on my flist who love Rome, and about as many who watch Spooks, so I thought this might be an effective way of pimping the show to them. :)

I'm so looking forward to seeing The State Within. I've managed to get my hands on it, and I'm assuming I'll be marathoning it once I start watching. It sounds fantastic!

Hi, Marion. Thanks for dropping by and commenting!

I notice you're a fan of the The Wire too. You obviously have excellent taste in television. :)

Yes, The Wire (I am almost finished rewatching the first series) I just watched the first series of Rome, I am hoping to watch Dexter as soon as it comes out on dvd. And I have watched the first two series of Deadwood too. But my favourite right now is TSW - I love it so much that I actually bought the dvd - a rare thing. Nicholas Brocklehurst is a great character!

Have you seen Brotherhood, also with Jason Isaacs? That is another excellent series.

So did I! Pre-ordered it from the US before it had even finished airing. :) And I loved the characters of Nicholas and George Blake.

I did watch a couple of episodes of Brotherhood last year. I thought it was like a less accomplished The Wire, and as great as the acting was, it didn't quite capture my interest

Even before I read this I was making mental comparisons to my favourite television show, Rome. The mix of the politics and the personal makes for a very realistic story, as well as the fast-paced plot. The fact that the authors aren't afraid to do horrible things to their characters (moreso in Rome, perhaps) adds to that. I can't say enough good things about either of them. Rome will always triumph in my mind, but The State Within is in very similar style and worth a few rewatches.
