First, in politics/economics, It's the Inequality, Stupid: Eleven charts that explain everything that's wrong with America. These visual representations of income inequality in America are extremely powerful. Although honestly, not like I'm regretting voting for Feinstein or anything - one has to consider the alternatives we have in California ( Read more... )

The sad thing about income inequality is that we're doing this to ourselves. My mother is so poor that she has to rely on the church for food, but she still votes for tax cuts for the rich.

I honestly sometimes think that people have no idea how they're being affected by the government. In that sense I think government has gotten "too big" - and by that I mean that it's entirely beyond ordinary people's ability to comprehend what they do.

I think that certain viewpoints are just so hyped up to be something they're not that people don't know the difference. It's not that the government's workings are too complicated to understand, but that learning about it requires more time and effort than people are willing to give. Most of us would rather spend what little free time we have watching movies and playing games, not researching political issues. The media mainly shows sensational and controversial stories, but rarely provides any real education or unbiased information on current affairs.

I sometimes think it would be better if we required people to have a college degree in order to vote. Unfortunately, that would not prevent my mother from voting.

What they do really isn't that complicated, but like you said it gets surrounded by issues and viewpoints that complicate the issue. As more and more shit comes between people and actual legislation, people lose sight of what the effect upon them will be or actually is or how it will really change their world.

I can honestly say that having a college degree doesn't change anything. I would still rather play games and watch movies than look up information on politics.
