What happened in Tales of Ba Sing Se for Mai/Zuko?

Hmm. Maybe I will get some of the old stuff up later this week!

Zuko told Jin "It's complicated." At the time I didn't think it was at all likely he was referring to Mai. But post-magazine, I could see it as a possible interpretation ("One could even argue," as Rawles writes). Especially in an earlier draft of the date comic, in which Zuko is revealed to have carried a heart-shaped rock (that young!Mai gave him) on his person throughout all of his banishment.
