Everyone has to find their own way to calm that stuff down. Meditation works for some people, and not others. Other people go entirely the wrong way and become dependant on something/someone or abuse substances. One small thing that helped me control things in my head a little bit was to just start noticing and feeling the things around me/the moment around me. Taking the time to live in the moment and appreciate it for what it is and doing whatever it is that needs to be done at that precise moment to be calm and happy. It doesn't work all the time just because I have so many issues to work out, but it is one thing that has been very good for me, so I wanted to suggest it. Just stop, breathe in, take a look around and notice your environment, find something to be grateful for and just live in that moment, even if it's only a couple minutes.
