In need of music to listen to while I write this paper, I pulled out a case of infrequently-listened-to CDs and found my burned copy of the last Chorale and Chamber Singers concert I performed in at college, in the spring of my senior year. Right now I'm listening to Gabrieli's "Omnes Gentes" -- benefitz, that's you doing the tenor solo, isn't it?

If The National's Boxer is a perfect album for late night driving, then I learned today that walking to school on a late fall afternoon calls for Andrew Bird's Armchair Apocrypha. I had a moment of extreme music nerd pride tonight, when I not only identified an unfamiliar song on the radio as being in 7/8, but then managed to count it off in demonstration.

Latest song added to the roster is one of the first ones I really wanted to learn to play on bass, Tom Waits' "Black Market Baby." It foiled me at first, but now, armed with my ability to pick out scales and therefore the knowledge that it is in the key of G#m, I have the basic skeleton down and intend to learn how to improvise the bassline under ( Read more... )
