Inspired by the sudden spate of teachers at my school marrying each other. Un-betaed as I haven't heard from my beta in over three weeks. So I need a beta for the ficathon. *looks hopeful*
Title: Taken
Summary: The Maths teacher explains to the English teacher why it is pointless to stare at the Science Teacher. Set before an Unearthly Child.
Rating: Very safe PG, I think.
“What’s so interesting over there, Kitty?”
The Maths teacher, Alice Wilson, sat down next to the English teacher, Katherine Cole, and took a sip of tea.
“Ian Chesterton.”
Alice choked on her tea.
“What? He’s attractive enough, isn’t he?”
Alice took a deep breath. The combination of choking and laughing had left her chest aching. “Oh yes, I can see that. Bit young for me, of course, but I can see why you- I just keep forgetting how new you are.”
“What’s that to do with anything?”
“Because you must be the only member of staff, apart from the Headmaster, not to have noticed. But then you have the excuse of only having had a couple of weeks. The Headmaster’s more self-absorbed than some of the pupils. And they have the excuse of being teenagers. When-”
“Alice. Noticed what?” The Maths teacher did have a tendency to go off on tangents, something her classes used to their advantage.
“He’s taken, darling.”
“By whom?”
Alice smiled at her in the rather annoying way one would smile at a young child who has just suggested that the moon is made from cheese.
“Just look, sweetheart.”
Kitty looked back over at Ian, who was now laughing. She looked at the woman standing next to him, obviously retelling a story, her hands flying expressively. She saw the way there seemed to be a smile lingering around the corner of his mouth and the way her eyes sparkled. She looked between Ian and Barbara for a full minute before slumping back dejectedly.
“Well.”
“You see?”
“I must have been blind.”
“You’ve been busy; it’s only your second week.”
“Do you know, are they…” Katherine trailed off and waved a hand vaguely.
“I don’t think they’re lovers, no. Not yet.”
Kitty caught sight of the French teacher looking at the couple with the same dejected look. She caught his eye.
He had a pleasant laugh.
