groceries.......

I've been wondering lately why it is that I keep buying less and less groceries to try and stay in our budget yet I keep going over our budget more than I ever did. Today, while shopping, I paid more attention to prices rather than just grabbing the things that I normally get. I realized that almost everything seems to be up at least a dollar or ( Read more... )

Our agriculture is so screwed right now. the corn goes in the cows and our cars instead of our bellies.

I am not sure how the crazy brits are doing it but Fresh and Easy has had the best produce and Meat (not that you care) that I have had in years.

Yeah, I shopped there a few weeks ago, and the prices were good and the food was fresh. The bad thing was that it's hard for me to get enough food for two weeks there as that's all I have time to generally shop for. I think I will start going there more often though.

its funny that you mention that... brett and i are doing a raw foods diet for a bit as sort of a detox and when we were shopping for produce last night, i was amazed at the higher price and the shittier quality. we passed on so many fruits because they were already past the point of ripe..

i also saw on the news last week that in some places in the country, stores are limiting how much rice someone can buy because people keep stockpiling for a crisis they feel is looming. its a scary time.

yeah, I'm kind of oblivious to the headline news world due to my schedule. So, I had no idea what was going on. The vegetables all were in bad shape, fo sho. Even the packaged stuff that had a sell by date a week away looked like it would be bad tomorrow. Rad that we may get to live through a depression!

I've totally noticed this too, and have recently started a "Dollar Store Gourmet" phase in cooking. You have to thoroughly check the packages for spoilage, but I've been finding some very decent veggies at the 99 Cents Only store. The downside is that you never know what they'll have and there are limited choices, but the store is less than a mile from my house, so it's easy to make a pass once a week to see what's there. It has been an interesting cooking challenge. I've randomly found vegetarian frozen entrees there as well.

I also make an effort to get up early every few Saturday mornings to go to the downtown farm market in Phoenix. There is some really nice produce there, and it's locally grown. But, you really need to get there by 10am before it gets picked over, and on some Saturday mornings, that's just too early, you know?

I wish I had time to do things like that! I generally work 7 days a week and have 2-3 rehearsals etc., but that sounds really smart!

Maybe we could start some kind of veggie coop thing where we all chip in to get the veggies, a couple of us go to the market to buy them and then divide them out to everybody. Or if someone has a membership to Costco or Sam's club...maybe we could all chip in for staples(TP,veggies, household supplies...) and then buy them in bulk and share them with eachother. I don't know if this would help.But...

You are so right about the government straightening up. But do you really think any of the candidates are willing, able and determined to make that change?

I have my doubts.
