I do agree, Jack could have had the same motivation without Ianto dying. That said, I actually like shows were they aren't afraid to kill of loved characters even if it hurts at the time. It gives a more realistic feel to the series, even if I cried and actually yelled at the screen when Ianto died. I watched it with a friend of mine and I think I hit her pretty hard as well, I needed to blame someone ^^
It isn't so much that they killed Ianto that bothered me - but why and how they did it. That being said, I did my happy dance of joy when I saw that Torchwood is going to be coming back.
