Home is where you find it.

River had been keeping to herself a lot since waking from the odd fog-induced dream of home. She didn't want to think about it, but she couldn't stop turning it over in her mind. That wasn't home anymore. Hadn't been for a good long time, though she hadn't consciously acknowledged it. Serenity was home. River's crew was her family. They had risked and even given their lives for her when her own parents wouldn't even talk to her in the street.

She sat up in a tree on the path to the compound, not trying to hide but liking the feeling of being mostly hidden anyway. Watching the people walk past, some without even knowing she was there. She wondered if they were all as lost in their own thoughts as she was. Missing their homes and their families and not even realizing that it was likely they had a family that was just as real as blood right here. It was a comforting thing to know.

Almost covered up the memory of her father telling her to go away and not come back.

[Summary: River, still affected by her "trip home", hangs out in a tree. Mal seeks and finds her, and joins her in the tree. There is much heartfelt talk of home and bravery and fruit and some touching, and Mal realizes he might have a nice spot reserved for himself in the Special Hell. He tries to leave before it gets out of hand, but River, wanting something she can't define, goes after him. Mal can't take it anymore and kisses her. River learns quick, and there is much more kissing. Fade to black.

River also talks about home with Veronica. There is no kissing. :D]
