The month goes on, and we get closer to the holidays. I bury myself in work, in looking after the girls, in hanging out with my friends, trying to give myself as little time alone as possible. Making sure I don't have too much time to think. To dwell ( Read more... )

The Winchester was one of the few safe havens that Sookie felt she had in full on the new, wintry, and urban version of the island. The place had changed, of course, as much as everything else had. Beautiful wooden molding was set along the perimeter of the room, all of which gave the place more of an aged look, one of another era and time entirely- but unlike so many other places on the island, Sookie felt no hesitation before settling fully in the establishment, and the only explanation was the staff and owner alike. Although she missed the days when she'd been all too aware of the ongoings around the island, waitressing was something that suited her well, kept her aware of the personal events in people's lives and active on her feet. That she'd found a much less limiting dress than most to wear certainly didn't hurt matters. (The lack of sleeves and the ability to see her feet were both pretty crucial, as it turned out, to movement on the floor ( ... )

"Shut up," I laugh, pulling back to look at her with a smirk, "You think this is funny? This is serious fuckin' business. Come on."

Catching her wrist, I turn to press a kiss to the palm of her hand, my fingers curling around her own.

"You're hurtin' my feelings."

Nose wrinkling and laughter louder than before- 'cause really, that kiss on my hand tickles- I quickly lean in to press another kiss to his lips. It's just, you know. It's just kind of nice, that we can do this type of thing without it being strange, weird, what have you. I'm not sure that I would've been able to pull it off with half of the people at Merlotte's, truth be told.

But Neil's kinda special like that.

"Well, sorry, but your serious fudging business will have to wait until after my shift," I tell him, nudging his cheek with the tip of my nose before I slip away, tying the apron around my waist. "But you're totally my hero, Neil McCormick. I'll find a way to pay you back somehow."

"Is there anyone I can go get to help you out?" Aidan said, giving her a smile. There were plenty of people here, so there was bound to be someone besides Aidan that she felt comfortable kissing. Not that Aidan wouldn't have done so, if she didn't mind, but he really didn't want to assume anything just yet.

Nose immediately wrinkling, Sookie seized up just a touch- of all of the people who could've ended up in front of her for this, Aidan was... well, he was one of the more awkward options, as it was. As much as Sookie wanted to be able to grab the first person to help free herself, Aidan was a possibility that toed the line rather closely. "Nnnyeah," Sookie nodded, before slipping back onto her stool and patting the one next to her. "Probably. I mean, you're taken, and by someone I don't know, so I can't really do the whole 'I swear the kiss meant nothing to me' talk, even if it was true.' So I'm afraid we're definitely stuck on needing to find someone else, but since there are plenty of folks around and I'm sure Neil will spot me sooner rather than later, why don't you just pull up a seat and we can chat?"

"Well I'm sorry that I'm so repulsive that the thought of kissing me offends you, but I'll gladly keep you company," he said with a grin, sitting down next to her.

He knew that in reality, it was probably best to avoid a kiss. Aidan was with Martha and he knew that he could resist even the small temptation of Sookie, it was best not to tempt fate by kissing a beautiful, kind woman that he had some admitted chemistry with.

"Enjoying Victorian London?"

She didn't have it in her to joke as fully as she ever had before, but still Sookie tried for a smile. The recent encounter with Mitchell made it hard to act so lightly about a kiss here, a kiss there, or about mutual attraction. He kept on clouding her thoughts, and though they'd been separated for months, sometimes Sookie expected him to somehow breeze into her life again. But she shook the thought away now, because she didn't want the opinions of others clouding her decisions, not anymore, not at the hands of those whose opinions she already knew were grounded deep.

"You're not repulsive," she settled for saying. "But I'm not gonna be the homewrecker. There's just no way. I may be dressed questionably for the standards of this time- those being the only parts of this London that I really can't stand, that sometimes the ghosts look at me like I've committed some crime- but that's all practical. Not trying to draw in any guys at the moment. Just wanna wait tables."

Aidan thought that Sookie was being a bit serious about the whole thing, but he knew that she'd gone through a lot of stuff lately so maybe humor wasn't the best thing to try right now.

"Well, since you're stuck here for the moment would you like something to drink?" he asked.
