Weddings Bells are Gonna Ring

This London thing is such bullshit. Rachel isn't sure who hates it more, she or Raylan, but thank God they're both cranky. She's not sure she could fake liking it for a month. Danny loves it. He's puffed up like a little rooster and she's trying not to ruin it for him. The thing is, Rachel has been to London. Real London has electricity and flush ( Read more... )

He finds her like that and just stands and watches her for a moment. It doesn't take much to figure out that this is like the gravestones. He's got his clothes as relaxed as he can manage, tie loosely knotted. He's foregone a hat in mourning for the one that he's lost.

People assure him that his old hat's coming back.

"Rachel, stop."

Rachel freezes immediately. Some part of her had hoped she could just hide it from him, as fucked up as that is. It's almost reassuring to know that a piece of her is still a coward, feels very familiar.

"I'm so sorry," she whispers, not able to face him yet. "I didn't know. I swear I didn't know. It's from after I got here."

Crouching, he picks up one of the sheets of paper, reading it. He raises one eyebrow.

"Why'd you need to apologise for this, Rach?" he asks, head tilted. "It's not like it was you. Anymore than Helen was in the ground when I left her."

"Because he's a murderer," she says, voice still soft and shaky. "He's supposed to be in jail and if I did that I must be really, really fucked up. And that's exactly who I'd be if I didn't end up here. It's shameful."

"Hey! Hey, hey, what the hell are you doing, hey, come on," Danny says, grasping at her arms and hauling her away from the sign to try and restrain her before she starts to bleed from her goddamn nails. "Rachel, count to ten, aloud, now," he orders.

"I can't," she cries, tears gathering. She's been so afraid he'd realize who she used to be. "He's a murderer, Danny. I must be so fucked up. He killed his brother and I won't marry Raylan but I married him!"

Danny wraps his arms around her more securely, forcing a bind over her torso and turning her until she's facing him. "Hey," he snaps, getting eye contact and not even daring to release it. "Rachel, you know as well as I do that things happen back home because we take different paths. Did you marry that asshole here?"

"No, but it's still me," she insists, trying and failing not to look right at him. "It's because he's buying me drugs or because I'm screwing someone over I know myself. I'm still ruining everything."

Life right now is pretty ridiculous, but Priestly embraces it all the same. What else can they do, right? And he likes to think of himself as a go with the flow kind of a guy under most circumstances, when he has the emotional fortitude to carry on.

Plus, he really likes the hats.

"Hey, looking good," he says to Rachel, stomping his boots as he enters the compound right past her, before realizing that all is not well in Rachel land. "Hey," he says, turning back to her. "Hey."

Rachel turns quickly, looking wildly at Priestly and then all around to see who else has seen this.

"Don't tell anyone," she begs, hands still clenched around the certificates. "I don't know what to do. It's bad. It's really bad."

"How bad can it be?" says Priestly, though once the words are out of his mouth he knows that's the wrong kind of question to ask on the island. "Are you all right? What happened?"

She thrust a handful of marriage certificates at him, hand shaking. "It's from home, after I came here. I married someone really, really bad. He killed someone. I don't know why I did it."

Sonya only knew Rachel from her shifts at the club-she couldn't believe she actually missed boucing-but she knows well enough when there's something that someone doesn't want them to see. Something usually courtasy of the island-or city, in this case.

She grabs at her wrist the next time she sees Rachel fling a piece of paper back, not an easy thing to do considering that the sleeves and maternity corset make such actions a little more awkward.

"It's not helping." She said, firmly, hoping that there was still some rational behind the pregnancy hormones (she herself was still experiencing how much of a bitch they were) and the horror of being the island's 'target for the day. "You'll only find yourself in more paper than you can get out of."

"Don't" Rachel hisses, trying to wrench her wrist out of her grip. She's well aware that she could kick her ass, but she's too upset for that to mean anything.

"I have to get rid of it."

Sonya may've been too big to give anyone a proper ass-beating, but her grip was still strong. She held on.

"And your present attempts now are working so well." It may've been said in sarcasm, had she not been serious.

Sonya turned her attention to the notice board, not seeing just how she could have that many certificates. It would've been too thick to tack on otherwise except via a nail.

"Let's try another way." There had to be an end in sight, unless the island was just that fucked up.

During the change in setting, along with everything else, the utility knife that Sonya always carried had changed into a five inch switch blade. This she took out and ,flipping the blade, stuck it between the paper and where it was held in place on the wall. A few good twists and she was able to pull out the tacks holding the certificate in place.

"It'll just keep coming back," Rachel whispers, barely restraining the urge to punch her in the face. Sure enough, a new pile appears. "It wants him to know. It wants Raylan to find out."
