(the legionnaire's lament)

The Bookshelf seems hell bent on only giving him Ian Fleming novels. It had been amusing for the first couple of times, but after a while novelty had worn off. Especially considering how badly Alex wanted to read something that didn't pertain to his old life back in England. Not to mention the fact that he thought James Bond was all in all a pretty ( Read more... )

"What...did the island leave you?" Alex finds himself treading carefully around Bart sometimes, because it's obvious that his life was similarly in turmoil - although perhaps even more so because of the added factor of powers, which Alex was still trying to wrap his mind around. The implications were terrifying, because he kept thinking about all of the evil people he'd encountered in the past year. Damian Cray. Julia Rothman. Winston Yu. He actually cracks a grin at that, because it's true, and because that very factor had helped him out time and time again. Of course, he was always found out and eventually captured, but that was because evil people had the tendency to be paranoid. And paranoid people had video cameras all over the place. The smile fades almost as fast as it comes.

"No. I didn't get one," but true to form, Alex shrugs as if it doesn't bother him.

"Did you ever get to tell anyone? Someone you could actually trust, I mean," Bart had to ask. It was harder when you couldn't. And sometimes it didn't help. Griff had tried to kill him anyway.

"We've got some manipulative jerks back home, too. I sometimes wonder if the government looks for them or trains it."

"I did, actually," the first person had gotten angry when he'd mentioned the whole thing, convinced that it was all some sort of sick fantasy. But despite everything, he was grateful for that. Some things were just not meant to be tackled alone. He was lucky to know the people he did. Bart's words earn a sort of wry smile from him, weary but sarcastic. The smile of a tough old veteran, or something like that. "Probably a bit of both. Looks for potential and then breeds it."

"You realize that could apply to you, right?" Bart said, amusement sparkling in his eyes. "I was born to run. Almost literally. Nobody actually mentioned what happened when I started crawling at the speed of sound."
