Duck's not jealous of the GAE. For one thing, he's been building huts here for five years now; he knows his craft, even if the majority of his skills aren't meant to produce something fancy. And for another, he's fifty, too old and wise for jealousy ( Read more... )

Silas isn't sure what possessed him to check out the island's forge, except that it's one of the areas he has yet to explore and sometimes, he really is that bored. At any rate, it would be pretty cool to watch someone forge something, he doesn't know what, but he doesn't get that far. Along the way, he gets distracted by a voice from within a residential community that reminds him of Agrestic, if it was magically shifted to a tropical island and crossed with a holiday resort. And also not ashes. The voice, which sounds nothing if not kind, threatens the furthest thing from that, although he doubts anyone will really be dropping any bombs today. Then again, this place actually is that crazy.

If the conversation struck him as odd, the scene that awaits him is no easier to decipher, nor are the words with which he's greeted. His gaze darts between the awkwardly glittering man and the girl in the tree house, holding a hand over his eyes as a shield against the sun. "That's... nice. You gonna turn him in?"

"Oh wow," replies Cassie, sounding for all the world as though she hadn't considered this. "Should I? I thought perhaps I would keep him. You're very handsome now!" she calls to Duck. "You could be stood in the garden to keep away the birds."

Duck exhales, watching a small cloud of glitter roll away from him through his cracked lids. "I dunno," he says to the boy, Silas, he thinks, not Peeta, "they got showers in jail." He tries shaking out his arms, but only succeeds in inhaling another shiny breath. "Or hoses," he coughs. Those work too."

As far as defense systems go, it's pretty inspired, if a bit ineffective. Silas has to marvel at the realization that this is where he lives, now, a place frequently to calm and quiet where no one keeps a loaded shotgun by the door and sleeps with a knife under the pillow. Or even a crossbow, with which his family had to make due for a good few weeks. Free, legal pot and not a gang war to be heard of; Nancy would whither and die within her first hours here, he's convinced.

"Aren't birds attracted to shiny objects?" asks Silas, his neck tilted up toward the sky. "So that'd be kind of counterproductive."

"Um...."

Okay, seriously, Kate being at a loss is one thing but Sam can't even process a response between staring slack-jawed at his be-glittered grandpa. They'd been following Duck around for a little while, trying to practice being quiet because Geoffrey thought Sam should learn to be more subtle and sneaky as a precursor to his stage career or something and this is just not how she thought it was going to end.

"Duck is sparkly!" Sam finally exclaims, running over to pat at the multicolored glitter still wafting down Duck's legs. "Hi!" he calls up into the tree. "Pretty!"

Cassie looks down at them both, her mouth open as if to suggest it's they who are the surprise. "Oh wow," she says, "Hello." She remembers them, Kate and Sam. They met in the pantry. "It is pretty, isn't it?" she asks the boy, urging him to admire her handiwork before looking to Kate. "May I give him a present?"

"But maybe don't throw it down?" says Duck, cracking his eyes the tiniest, sparkling inch. "He might not wear whatever it is so well."

"Yeah, just...not the glitter kind," Rachel suggests, recognizing the pantry girl. She's looking crazier or something, poor thing.

"I Sam!" he chirps up at her, smearing glitter all over his shirt before wrapping himself around Duck's leg. "You got presents?"

Castle blinked warily at the sight he was greeted by. It reminded him, vaguely, of that time he'd been at a book signing when one of the newest Twilight books had come out. He'd been coughing glitter for days. Castle felt an enormous amount of pity for the poor man, but it was still sort of hilarious in an immature way that he needed to indulge in when his home life was as stressed as it was.

"And he's a shining example of his craft," Castle said in reply, unable to help the pun.

"Oh," exhales Cassie, for once unable to summon the 'wow' that usually follows. "That was very awful," she calls down to him. "I'm afraid you'll have to be bombed as well."

"Run," Duck wheezes, unharmed but afraid to open more than the corner of his mouth lest he decorate his lungs as well. "She's got water balloons up there, too. Save yourself."

Unfortunately, it was like giving bread to a starving man. His eyes lit up and the thoughts of mischief and water balloons began to rampage through his mind. "You know, after all the terrible puns I've made over the years, I've earned it. Will I at least get a water balloon in retribution for ills done wrong to me?" he called up to her.

It turned out that going to visit Billy was turning into an incredible day.

"I don't think you've properly caught him, Cass," Chris says, trying his best to step out of the way of some of the glitter that's still floating about. Once you've got some of that on you, there's no getting rid of it for days. Chris has been to enough to enough parties where there's been glitter to know that he'll end up somehow finding it in his pants a week later.

"You missed a spot, right here behind his ear, I think." Though, Chris doesn't think there actually is a spot there that needs glitter.

“Oh,” says Cassie, “but, no, you're quite right. But I've got you!” she exclaims, brightening. He's appeared out of nowhere, and though he's always welcome, his coming feels particularly fortuitous now. “Constable Chris. You can help me decide what's to be done with him.”

“I promise,” says Duck carefully, exhaling a sparkling cloud despite his best efforts. “I promise you, there is not a part of me that's missing glitter. You know what? See if you can earn yourself a water balloon, might help me wash this off.”

"Sorry, mate, don't really have the authority to do that," Chris replies, content to play along with whatever game Cassie's started, "You could probably do with some proper feathers, though. Got anything like that, Cass?"

Wandering seemed like a good idea. Caroline was still trying to get her bearings of this place, trying to remember who was who and did what. The place wasn't impossibly big, like New York or DC, but it was definitely bigger than Mystic Falls. Fewer people, more land to cover. She might miss the history, tradition and crazy of her hometown, but she was bound and determined to make the most of this place.

Turning the corner around the front of the forge, her eyes widened as she smiled at the declaration. It was definitely kind of weird, but oh well. It wouldn't surprise her at all to learn that there were spies on the island. "Seriously? What sort of spy is he?"

“Oh wow,” Cassie greets her in surprise. Not that she's been paying particular attention, but she'd been sure they were alone. “You're very pretty, you need no decoration at all. But yes, I'm afraid he is a spy. A building spy, aren't you?”

“Guilty,” Duck murmurs, rubbing his eyes until he can at least see. “I head the building crew. Thought I might find some new ideas out here in luxury land.” He sighs and does his best not to spy - the last thing Cassie needs is encouragement. “Found this instead.”

Well that was new. Caroline wasn't exactly sure what the pretty blonde girl meant by needing no decoration, her eyebrows knitting together in momentary confusion before she smiled again. "Really? Thank you," she said because that's what normal people do when complemented. "It is really nice out here. But I take it that you live here," she paused pointing at the girl, before turning to point at the guy. "And you just build stuff. Which is cool. Building is very important and all that."
