River always did love to dance. And even though she still wasn't really convinced that she was the best person to teach others how to do anything, she did love her dance classes. She worked really hard, and most of her students did try to keep up with her even if she didn't always remember that it might not be as easy for them as it was for her ( Read more... )

River put on her favorite Swan Lake after the class was over, and flitted amongst the students remaining after class as she set the studio back in order. After Serenity, it really was her favorite place on the island most days even when she knew she ought to be getting home in case Zoe was getting to be too much for Mal. River could tell that they liked each other pretty well, and seemed to get along, but Zoe was rapidly approaching her second birthday and beginning to find ways to become a trial to her parents. River thought Mal deserved a little more time to get used to the idea of her at all before he had to be challenged like that all on his own.

Still, she lingered, twirling in front of the mirror to let her skirt and her hair fly out around her in the manner she'd enjoyed since she was not much bigger than her own little daughter, an idea that she still couldn't quite get her head around when she thought of it that way. It was easier to pretend she was free just to dance.

He's spent the morning with Zoe. Bit by bit, they're learning each other, figuring each other out. Right not, she's fitted onto his hip like she belongs there and, together, they're watching her momma dance.

"Looking good, little bird," he says, and, not for the first time, he finds himself at the centre of a real complicated storm.

River stopped her turn when she was facing them, and dropped a little curtsey in their direction. Zoe clapped, and River grinned at the both of them. It pleased her to see the two of them looking comfortable together, even if she only got to share a connection with Mal through Zoe now. It was better then nothing, and she was trying to learn to be happy with what she had.

"I'm just playing," she said. "You missed all the real dancing."

"Probably for the best," he says, wryly, setting Zoe down on the ground so that she could run to River. "I doubt I could've carried it off real graceful."

Now, Kurt knew how to be honest with himself: he wasn't the best dancer in any of his classes. Dance, on its own, wasn't in any way his forte. Certainly, he knew that he was better than random passerby, and the past year and a half of keeping up with glee had improved his skills considerably. But even better than sitting pretty at the top of a class was having a higher goal in sight, one easily within reach. Perhaps that was what made Kurt's dance classes some of his favorites in his schedule. They weren't as practical as self-defense or sewing, but he enjoyed the way that he came out of every class feeling loose, relaxed, ready to spend an hour or so sitting in the shade and just enjoying the gentle island breeze as it rustled through the trees ( ... )

Wichita isn't completely positive why she signed up for this class in the first place. She's never really done anything resembling dancing before, and she doesn't have any experience, but something draws her in. Maybe it's the need to do something with herself besides drinking, smoking up and the occasional cardio - although she should probably cut back on the first two if she ever wants to be remotely good at the third. Dance seems to be a good way to channel some of her frustrations, though, and there's always been something about the art of ballet that seemed so graceful. Maybe she wants to think of herself that way, the girl Columbus has always thought of her as.

She knows Kate and Santana, and there's even another girl here who looks like her and Olive, aside from bright red hair and a British accent, but she still stands off to one side, stretching as everyone else talks and finishes before she does. Her eyes meet a kid who can't be much older than she is - high school, at least - and she smiles, albeit briefly.

Although Kurt has no doubt in his mind that the doppelgangers that run rampant around the island defy the genetics of his world, on the whole, he doesn't mind seeing them around. Most of the time, there's nothing more distinguishing between them than a little bit of age, maybe hair color, little things that an actor or actress can change in practically the blink of an eye, but it's enough of a visual signal that he doesn't mistake one for the other in direct conversation, and if Kurt's honest with himself, he's actually kind of tickled to be on an island where there are a couple of Adam Pascals, Natalie Portmans, and so forth. The trio of redheads, admittedly, feature an actress (or at least, he assumes that she must be an actress, if there are so many of her on the island) that he isn't personally familiar with, but color him shocked when he learned that one of them was actually Ginny Weasley herself. (He was expecting Bonnie Wright. He's not too disappointed that the island chose otherwise ( ... )

It is a little strange to be sharing a class with yet another person who looks like her. Olive had been enough to try and get over, but it's easier at this point, especially now that they're friends - and she's not entirely sure if that's weird too, the fact that she feels like she can talk to someone who, aside from the obvious age difference, lighter complexion and hair color, could pass as her twin sister. She doesn't know if that's vain or whatever. But she's not going to allow herself to dwell in that for very long, because the more she thinks about it the more confusing it gets, and she could use a little less confusion in her life these days.

She offers a polite smile when she's directly addressed, and she shrugs, both shoulders rolling forward into a stretch toward her toes. "It's different than anything I've ever done," she admits. "I don't know, Could be fun so far, even if our teacher is shorter than I am."
