Freddie was not an animal person. He knew there were plenty of people around the island who had cats and dogs and birds and all kinds of things that made noise and smelled and he'd never planned on being one of those people. He'd never wanted to be one of those people, but he didn't have a choice when Maureen disappeared. She'd left an animal

Freddie and a dog. The ludicrous image was almost enough to make Anatoly laugh and forget the desire to punch the man in the jaw as hard as possible. As it was, he had to take a breath and remind himself to be civil - he didn't want to upset the dog, after all. It was not his fault he had poor taste in people.

"I see you have a friend," Anatoly said and if there was an implication that it was Freddie's only friend, it was a mere coincidence.

"I could say the same for you," Anatoly said then resolutely turned his back on Freddie before he did something which would get the two of them arrested. Oh, Freddie's reputation could suffer but he didn't want to be known as the instigator. Again. Even if it would be well and truly deserved.

"I have no regrets," Freddie snarled. It was a lie, but would Anatoly know that? To all appearances, Freddie was perfectly content with Prior and didn't have any regrets about how things with Florence had ended. Or, even if there might have been regrets, he'd moved on from them.

He knew that to be a joke. He hadn't moved on. He'd just festered.

"But you. You will always wonder what would have happened if you'd stayed. Now that you know that your sacrifice was worthless."

The truth was that Anatoly did know exactly what would have happened had he stayed. It would not have been right away and it might not even happen for some time but he would have drifted away and eventually left. Florence was lovely and an amazing woman but she was not truly he what needed.

He was certainly was not about to admit that to Freddie though, so he simply cursed at him in Russian and kept walking away.
