Friday was Jack's favorite day of the week. He loved waking up before the sun and heading for the beach. He loved swimming. He loved the nets and lines. Every Friday he brought in a catch for the kitchen and the feeling of usefulness he got from the act was unrivaled by anything else he did during the week ( Read more... )

House smelled Jack before he saw him. He was sitting at the kitchen table with a sandwich, and a sudden whiff made him wonder if he'd forgotten what he'd put in it, and there was fish instead of boar's meat between his two pieces of bread.

He glanced up then, and...

"Jesus Christ, Jack, would you put that thing away? I'm trying to eat here."

That thing, of course, just being the fact that he was half naked and sweaty. Though the fact that he smelled strongly of fish made that slightly less appealing.

Jack only laughed as he took the catch to put it on ice.

"You can stand the sight for ten minutes," he replied. "Do you want some coffee while I'm over here?"

House took a giant bite of the sandwich, chewing, and answered with a full mouth, "Only if you're going out of your way."

"It'll be a hardship, yeah," Jack replied. He washed the fish off his hands and then grabbed House's cup, walked back to the pot, and poured the man a cup. He got himself one as well before bringing House's back to him.

"Good sandwich?"

Logan knew where to find Jack, and he made his way to the docks.

He smiled at the sight of his husband working, grinning as he sat down far enough away to not to get splattered with fish guts.

"Wasn't sure you'd still be here," he admitted. "I thought you might already be heading up to the compound."

"I'm just about ready to go. You've got good timing," Jack said as he flashed Logan a bright smile. "Oh, wait, you didn't come to help? I've got like three more you can gut if you want to..."

"Fuck that, I came to watch. Do you know how good you look when you're shirtless and playing with knifes?"he asked with a grin. "We need to bring that look into the bedroom one day. You know, without the fish."

He smiled faintly, and then ducked his head. "Actually, I've had some time to think, and I want to talk to you about something."

Jack had a quip on the tip of his tongue but then things got serious. Thinking and talking...even if it was something good, it made Jack nervous.

"Okay," he said, knife slipping into a fish easily. "What do you want to talk about?"

Harkness was up to the same thing Jack himself usually got up to more days than not but Jack didn't usually feel the need to grace the island with his shirtless glory while he cleaned fish.

"I'd ask if you wanted some help but there's no way I'm going to get half naked and stand next to you. That's just going to embarrass everyone."

"Yeah, I don't like people who look better than me showing me up," Jack replied, tossing a gutted fish into the basket. He looked Jack over, appreciation in his eyes, then he returned his focus to the work at hand.

"I wouldn't say no to helping me out but I only have the one knife. Looks like you're off the hook for working," he continued, happily grabbing another so he could slit it open.

"Uh, right. Because in the absence of our spouses, who are obviously biased, I'm pretty sure this island is going to line up for me over you even though you're the one sporting the rock hard abs." Jack said, grinning.

"And hey, everyone needs a supervisor. I'm...supervising."

"Supervising," Jack repeated. He didn't question it, though. Jack had fun with this work and wouldn't ever force someone to help.

"So how's things, Jack? You and Sam doing okay with William? That's got to be an adjustment," he said. He couldn't imagine taking on that kind of responsibility in the wake of losing good friends. He knew it happened all the time and Sam and Jack weren't alone in it, but it was a real kick to the nuts.

Hester watched the man work from the cover of the tree line. That was a lot of fish, and she knew what she was going to have for dinner, but that wasn't why she was watching. It was like watching Aragorn working on his boat. It was fascinating watching someone so clearly at what he was doing getting down to work and doing it. The intensity there. It reminded her of Tom, navigating the Jenny Hanniver.

She flinched back angrily from the tug she felt in her heart. She was not going to let herself go soft.

In the flinch, however, she got careless. She stepped on a twig, and it snapped.

Blade slid in, sliced, and with a light scoop the guts came out and plopped down into the water. Jack was humming tunelessly to himself, the rhythm set by the waves. Overhead the gulls squawked and dove down to compete with the fish for the offal. And Jack looked as happy as could be.

He twisted to toss the gutted fish in the basket and grab a new slippery creature. He spotted a bit of movement and when he saw it was a person he flashed a bright, toothy smile and waved with the knife before getting back to work. He wanted to get on the way back to the compound before the sun got much higher.

For once, Sonya didn't really have a destination in mind as she walked outside the compound. Fridays were easy days as far as school went, but it seemed that once the babies started kicking-they really started kicking.

Walking doubled as excercise and a good way to calm them down.

She did smile as she saw Jack headed in her direction.

"Hey," She greeted. "Mind some company." She didn't think so, after all, this was Jack, one of the most social guys on the island, but it was more a request than a question anyway.

She was also extremely glad to be well past her nausea, or the smell of fish would've sent her running as far away from him as possible. She didn't even like being near Hanzo when she was in that stage and he would return from a fishing trip.

"Not a bit," he replied. Jack gave her a fast once over and smiled. He loved the way pregnant women looked, so round and curvy all over.

"How are you feeling? Doing okay?" he asked as he sliced into the belly of another of his haul.

Sonya carefully sat down on the docks, leaning against one of the supports.

"I'm okay," She rested a hand under her belly. "I swear my insides are black and blue from kicking, but all things considered I'm not surprised." After all, both she and Hanzo were serious martial artists, would only make sense for their kids to get some of their influence.

"I remember Tosh said she got tired of having a foot in her ribs," Jack said. The memory wasn't so fresh and it wasn't quite as hard to talk about Tosh and Owen and Jackson now. Now it seemed like so very long ago.

"You've got a few months to go yet, right? Four or five?" he asked. He couldn't remember. He was so focused on their own kid that everything else had sort of faded into the background.
