Sam was flying. Okay, technically he was floating, hovering at best, but it was still awesome. He'd awoken to find himself floating above his bed, then when he freaked out at realizing that had happened, he crashed through it

From on high, there came a bubble. It was large, easily big enough for the figure within to be able to stand comfortably, tinted yellow, and smelled faintly of lemons. It floated gently down to the ground (from where, exactly, wasn't obvious) at a leisurely pace, hovered there for a few seconds, and then disintegrated, leaving Felix to hop down onto the ground, grinning broadly at the young man who'd just made such a unique entrance of his own.
"Watch the last step, it's a doozy!" he exclaimed with a laugh as he stood at the edge of the dip in the earth, once he was certain no one was injured. Not everyone could be as adept in mastering their abilities from beyond as he was, after all.
"Sound advice in any activity, really, powered or non," Felix agreed, nodding solemnly. "I spent a good couple of hours just floating around the jungle this morning before venturing out over the ocean. From there, though, the sky was the limit!"
"Well, that or until your bubble runs out of breathable oxygen and you pass out," Sam pointed out. Unless it was a breathable membrane, which would have been pretty cool.
"Man, if I went in one of your bubbles, we could totally go deep sea exploring."
"I never thought of that!" Felix exclaimed, eyes going wide in his excitement for a moment. "Although what if some kind of sea creature tried to pop it?" Not to mention the point about the air, particularly with a second person breathing it all up.
"That's a good point," Sam said, not having through of that. He wasn't sure how strong the bubble would be, and that wasn't the sort of place you wanted to test that.
"Probably why you're floating safely around and I crash landed in a giant heap and am lucky to be alive."
"'And Icarus, abandoning his guide, drawn by desire for the heavens, soared higher'," Felix said, nodding sagely. "Though to be fair, I have had a bit of experience in dealing with abilities of an inhuman nature. Not first-hand, no, but you pick up things when you've got friends who were... into that sort of thing." That, combined with a healthy dose of self-preservation, and he was all set for heroics!
"Ovid, nice," Sam said with a smile. "Not many people know Ovid. I only know because my mom once made me memorize that part of Metamorphoses. She thought it would be cute for a talent show if I did it wearing wings."
The way he talked about abilities made it sound like some sort of fetish. Which, who knows, maybe in some worlds it was.
"And yeah, my girlfriend is a superhero back in her world. I didn't really get a list of tips for suddenly acquiring powers. Probably should have."
"You never know when something will come in handy, be it Ovid's Metamorphoses, or preparing for one of your own," Felix said with a grin, nudging Sam with his elbow. He liked the way his mom seemed to think.
"Oh man, we could have gotten something awful like being a snake-person," Sam said, making a face. That was not a metamorphoses that Sam wanted to ever go through.
"I could be shedding scales instead of crashing to the ground, so I guess that's something to be thankful for."
"A were-sheep would have been one of the lamest things ever to turn into," Sam mused. He hoped that if anyone on the island got something like that, it would only be temporary.
"Do you know what anyone else has gotten? Any other powers?"
"Um... there was a fish-man in the showers this morning?" Felix offered after a moment's thought. "And fire-throwing, controlling animals, you know, the usuals," he added quickly, still kind of distracted by the notion of were-sheep.
"There was a merman in the showers, or someone shaped like a man but covered in fish scales?" Sam asked. Neither option sounded particularly pleasant. He considered himself pretty grateful to have gotten the power he did.
"Watch the last step, it's a doozy!" he exclaimed with a laugh as he stood at the edge of the dip in the earth, once he was certain no one was injured. Not everyone could be as adept in mastering their abilities from beyond as he was, after all.
