Comes And Goes (In Waves)

It's not that things are looking up exactly. It's that they just aren't looking so persistently down, which, for Meredith, is very nearly the same thing.

Or maybe they are looking up, maybe she's just being cautious. After all, every time she's thought things were working out before, she's found a way to crash and burn and she can't this time. Not ( Read more... )

"Hmm?" Lexie asks, instinctive, pausing at the question on her way past before she even stops to realize its source. That only takes her a moment, though - a glance underneath the table as she scans the floor for the missing pen - and then she's nodding, though the thing in question has yet to catch her eye. "Yeah, I'm sure it's right here somewhere," she says, ducking to a crouch, which seems to do the trick. She grabs the pen, then grins at Meredith, already straightening again. "Got it."

"Exactly," Lexie replies, mouth pulling into a smile. She can't pretend she isn't pleased that Meredith agrees, even though she'd have done it with or without approval. It's just that the outside validation is nice, especially coming from someone with whom she's so rarely seen eye to eye in the past. "And maybe it doesn't count for anything, but... that's kind of all the more reason to do it. Something to do - to learn - without all the commitment of a four-year program."

Meredith nods, then huffs out a laugh. "I don't think I could do that again," she jokes. "Seven years was school enough for me. Definitely stick with the smaller commitment." She has no interest in going back. Passing it on makes a lot more sense. If nothing else, it's closer to what she should be doing if she were still in Seattle.

People haven't even been here for seven years, of course, but somehow, Lexie thinks that would only make it all the more sensible not to sign up for anything so long term. Given the frequency with which people disappear, and when no one knows if they even get to remember what happened here when they go back, it would really just be pointless. "Then I don't have to focus on just one thing, either," she says lightly. "I can't even tell you the number of classes I had to pass up in college because I didn't have time."

"I can imagine," Meredith says wryly. She loved some of her courses, naturally, but she was never like that - a couple classes, maybe, but not more than a handful. Med school was a different question, of course, far more fascinating than college was, and she found a renewed focus when she applied, but this is one thing they certainly don't have in common. "Well, there are a lot of weird ones, I'm sure you'll have plenty to choose from."

"Knowing people around here, probably," Lexie jokes, nose wrinkling slightly. Mostly, she likes that about this place, and certainly it works in her favor where the school is concerned, but it's still worth mentioning. To say that some of the island's residents come from weird places is an understatement. "God, they'll probably have things I've never even heard of."
