The Kids Are Alright

There had been the obligatory freak out, of course, and it wasn't just a case of Ray being over-dramatic. He had a completely legitimate reason for his behavior, as did a lot of people on the island it seemed. But not being alone in suffering hadn't made him feel any better; a problem shared wasn't quite a problem halved in this situation. Asher ( Read more... )

"Asher," he repeated so she wouldn't have to, and then going right back to ignoring the boy, just as he had done the day before. Ignoring him made it easier to pretend that the morning before hadn't been the one of the most traumatic experiences of this life.

"You okay down there, half-pint?" Asher asked, crouching down in front of the table. It was still really fucking weird seeing her like that, but he knew it had to be a million times worse for her since she couldn't remember a damn thing. Not the past five-hundred years, not this island, not even him. More than weird, though, it was probably terrifying. "It's probably dirty under there."

"Uh, hello?" Danica heard the funny boy say, watching as he waved his hands around to get the man's attention. "I am still here, you know."

Since the man was ignoring him, Danica decided that was probably the best thing for her to do as well, so she turned her head away and refused to look any longer.

"Oh, I've seen that face before," Ray griped, dropping his hands and brushing the pair off. He had better stuff to do. "Whatev. Laters."

With the boy gone, the puppy disappeared from Danica's arms soon after. She looked a little forlorn without it. Thinking that the man was about to tell her off for the dirt, she put both her palms on the floor and started scooping the grit and the dirt together, glancing up at him every now and then as she did, to make sure he could see she was doing it.

"Mama puts straw down when there's sometimes mud, then she sweeps it all outside so it's not dirty." Sometimes she just scrubbed and Danica hated helping with that. "Do you have a sweeper?"

"Whoa, hey." Stopping her, Asher dusted the palms of her hands off. "I know..., but you don't have to do that. I'm not worried about the floor getting clean; you might get dirty if you stay under there. Someone else can take care of the sweeping."

When he brushed her palms clean, Danica watched the man's face. She knew it was the man from yesterday because of his teeth. She'd never seen teeth like that before except on dogs.

Asher could do the sweeping, she decided. Just because she was littler than him, didn't mean she had to do it. "Asher can sweep when he comes back from the horses." He'd been gone a long while but maybe that was just because she had been too. "What is that?" She pointed at his mouth.

"Why's she under the table?" Coop asked around a mouthful of chocolate chip cookie. This wasn't the first time he'd woken up in a body that hadn't been the one he'd gone to bed with, but at least he hadn't woken up as a little girl this time around. It was an improvement, no doubt, but that didn't change the fact that he couldn't wait until this was all over with.

He hated being a kid. Kids were mean and blunt and they made fun of you for medical conditions you had no control over and your lesbian moms. Even when there was no way for him to control that either.

"Who cares?" Ray answered, giving the kid a look. A couple of days ago he might have cared, but right now he couldn't figure out why. It was like he'd been asleep for twenty-five years, dreaming out an entire life, only to wake up and realise he still had it all to live. Just because he remembered the stuff he'd thought and felt, didn't mean he still thought and felt it now. "It's just Danica."

Breaking out in a coughing fit as a bit of cookie traveled down the wrong tube, Fitch thumped on his chest with a balled fist, eyes beginning to water slightly. "That's Danica?" He managed while trying to gasp for air. "Holy crap!"

She was so small. And... cute.

"She don't know who I am, so you're probably safe too."

Safe from being hugged and snuggled by the looks of it. When Ray glanced back at her though, both girl and puppy were staring at him.

"Man, that's my cue to head. I'll go get Asher." Somebody had to feed her, after all. "Keep an eye on her?"
