Several months and another lifetime ago, Hiccup had needed a basket of fish and a lot of tricks to get the new tail on Toothless. Now, the dragon sat still for him as he was buckled into the leather saddle and metal spines that connected the tail fin to Hiccup’s left foot pedal. It's one of the most glorious things that he's ever seen. He's standing on the beach, his bow and quiver slung across his shoulders and he stands stock still and tips his head back and just watches his friend and his dragon fly.

The cheer that spills out of him is completely and utterly unconscious and joyful.

Hiccup laughed and pumped a fist in the air, cheering back at him before he and Toothless moved as one to turn and bring them back to earth. "We did it!"

"So I can fucking see," says Gale, walking over, heels of his boots digging into the sand. He reaches out and scratches behind Toothless' ear.

"Brilliant."

"I knew we could do it."

Toothless closed his eyes and sank to the ground for his pettings, belly warm in the damp sand. As he dropped down, Hiccup kicked his metal leg loose and eased into the sand, annoyed when his foot sank down a little.
