The good news for the patrons of the Winchester was that Archie had gotten better with his cooking. The bad news was that for a space of time, he had had to sacrifice his eaters to the pursuit of learning. Nothing had ever been inedible, and certainly nothing had ever caused one harm, but a regular patron with middling intelligence would have ( Read more... )

Honestly, the Doctor didn't make it into the Winchester particularly often, but he'd heard a rumour about the menu, and he made it in for a late breakfast after dropping off Nate in the children's office.

"Scones," he said, and grinned widely. "Oh yes, I'd be terribly cross, that's certain. Don't suppose there's coffee to go with?" Butter, maybe? Hard to say.

"I think," Rose said as she slid into the seat next to him. "That it's a crime that I didn't really know about this place, although I s'ppose it was my own fault." She waved her own scone at him. "I was thinking a bit that I should get out more, not-" Oh, that was awkward. "Not spend so much time in the TARDIS, and here I am, pineapple scones."

She'd not really reacted well to there being another universe, and even more than that, there being so very little of substantive things to do.

She read quite a bit. Helped where she could in the TARDIS. Had a very healthy tan. Ran about quite a bit, just to sort of fill her day. Not the sort of thing that really made your day worthwhile, but it filled it, and gave her the ability to sort of avoid talking to the Doctor about... things. About things like What happened after you ended up here and Why I'm so much older. Good things to avoid, she thought, til the time was right to talk about them, and... yes. Definitely, still not right ( ... )

"I don't go here much, myself," the Doctor said with a shrug. "Mostly because of taking care of Nate's breakfast, mind, but I heard the rumours about the scones and I had to make a stop in." He offered Rose a smile. "Besides, too much time in the TARDIS does tend to do things to you--even just staying put."

He was pretty sure she was aware of that, and let her draw her own conclusions.

"What, does it surprise you that I can rustle up baked goods? I'm better than a Greggs, me, when I get going, Rose Tyler. Teacakes, flapjack, Battenberg..."

"Not chips." She sighed, blowing out her cheeks. "Now I get why you asked me about proper chips, when I got here." She looked over at him, and took a bite out of her scone, chewing and swallowing as she spoke behind her hand. "You should make all that for me. Just... I don't know. Birthday. Christmas. Whatever." God knew she just missed food. She'd always gotten enough exercise to make up for it, but Rose? Dieting was sort of against what she believed in. Only lived once.

"I'm not going to turn into some sort of... I don't know. Time... thing, am I?" She chewed on her lower lip. "I mean- Well." For the last few months, she'd spent more time in the TARDIS than she probably should. "It's not different than the whole wibbly fuzzy bits of void things, is it? I mean, I sort of went catapulting around through so many dimensions without a capsule that just sort of hanging about isn't really on my radar. For all I know, I got my life's worth of radiation in one of those worlds." She shrugged, leaning on her hand as she looked over at him.

Karen's way too clever and mouthy for Rollie to preach about having a good breakfast before school without getting one for himself before going to work, even when he feels like he'd rather get by with just a cup of coffee. It's nice not to have to trek all the way out to the compound and back, at least.

"Sure, I'm not picky," says Rollie, reaching for the plate. "Just baked?"

"Granted only enough time in this world to cool down," Archie confirmed with a pleased nod. "And a lack of discernment makes you the perfect consumer of my cooking."

"You wouldn't believe some of the things I've stuck in my mouth over the years," says Rollie, breaking off a piece and popping it in his mouth. This is definitely not among the worst of them. "Any chance there's coffee to wash it down with?"

His eyebrows rose at the assertion, equal parts intrigued by the possibilities and amused by them. "You wouldn't happen to have been a sailor by any chance?" he mused as he went to fetch the coffee pot. As it sat only a few paces away, Kennedy could continue the conversation as he poured the man a cup. "That sounds like the opening to a hell of a story, and sailors have those in abundance, I know."

Previously, William hadn't spent much time in the island's odd little restaurants and cafes, finding the kitchen to be perfectly adequate to his needs. But he did rather like the home-iness of the Winchester, and after Archie started working thee (something William had insisted laughingly was a terrible idea, advice that had obviously been ignored, as usual), he'd found himself lingering over coffee on many a Wednesday morning and pointedly keeping his comments on Archie's many kitchen disasters to himself.

Well, most of his comments.

From the other end of the counter, he eyed the plate of scones, and then looked warily at Archie. "You haven't forgotten the sugar again, have you?"

"That would be terrible indeed," said Ned, eying the scone he'd placed on his plate, along side his small order of eggs and bacon. Little Eli was fast asleep in his stroller beside Ned's seat, and he was taking one of his few quiet moments of the day to indulge in a meal he rarely ate in a place he rarely visited. It made for a nice change of pace, on some level.

It was one thing to tease Archie when he was the only one in hearing, another entirely to do it in front of others, and Bush quickly realized his mistake. He shoulders straightened, and he took a scone off the plate as though to vouch for their quality. "Mm," he hummed thoughtfully. "They've got to be edible as anything. Couldn't sell 'em otherwise, right?"

"Right," Ned agreed. He stopped short of poking his scone, distracted when Eli stirred and made a noise in his stroller. Turning back, he nodded at the plate. "Have you tried them yet?"

"If you say so," Olivia said, and after the walk she'd taken earlier, she couldn't deny the need to snack on something, cool glass of water still in her other hand. She grabbed a scone and took a bite, giving the man an appreciative nod. It wasn't quite Walter's donuts, but it was good all the same.

"Not bad," she told him, then looked around, giving those nearby a polite smile.

The Doctor smiled back (yes, all right, he had a bit of a thing for blondes yet), and took a sip of coffee before he spoke. "Scones tend to surprise you," he said. "You think they'll be too dry or too crumbly, but then they turn out lovely."

odunham April 28 2011, 22:13:56 UTC
"This is quite lovely," Olivia agreed. Food didn't have the same effect on her as it did Walter, but she couldn't deny a good scone or donut every now and then.

"I'll have to come round more often," the Doctor noted, after a moment of finishing his scone and ordering a second. "I hadn't realised breakfasts here included this sort of thing."

Small talk, really, but that was all right before 10 am.

Marshall didn't spend a lot of time at the Winchester.

The food could be really great, but it was a long walk, well out of his way, and while he didn't spend all his time in the Compound, he wasn't really a hike in the jungle kind of guy.

But that morning, he got up early and headed for the beach, just for a change, and when he smelled food and saw the small crowd gathering, he couldn't really justify walking by without stopping.

He stepped inside, immediately seeking out a familiar face, but truthfully, it wouldn't have surprised him if he didn't find one.

"Hey, Marshall!" Maxxie called from his seat, throwing an arm up into the air to make sure the other boy saw him. He'd spent the early hours of the morning in the dance studio, working up a sweat, and then had plunged straight into the ocean, because he could. It had all left him a bit salt-tinged and starving, making breakfast in his swim trunks at the Winchester the best possible idea ever. Add Marshall's company to the mix and you had a wicked morning.

One corner of his mouth twitched, but otherwise his expression stayed the same, his eyes flickering across Maxxie's bare shoulders and chest before he could stop himself.

Maxxie seemed to have some kind of prejudice against shirts, but it wasn't like Marshall was going to complain about it.

"Hey," he said, sliding into the empty chair next to him. "Is there coffee?"

"Yeah, but it's really strong," Maxxie warned lightly. His own he had just cut with milk and gotten by, but he didn't know how Marshall liked it. "They also do a decent fry-up, if you're hungry." Maxxie's own plate was half-demolished, but he paused and took up his coffee once Marshall sat down. "So how're you?"
