When Pepper had first mentioned the idea of a boutique to Karen and Mary Jane, she'd immediately been all over the idea. As happy as she was being a beach bum, Karen had been looking for something to do for a while, but had been unable to find it. She didn't cook well, hadn't the first clue about agriculture, and wouldn't even dream of running for ( Read more... )

In all honesty, Sawyer didn't see what all of the fuss over the clothes box was. There was no doubt that the box provided rather interesting outfits on the whole, forcing some people to wear all shades of neon and fishnet as they traipsed around the island, but rather than seeing it as irritating, he found the whole process amusing. Watching which people were willing to walk around in whatever the box had to cough up, while then watching other people sit by the cardboard box for hours in turn. His brows raised as he saw how tall the clothes were piled up when he went down to the basement that day to do his laundry (a luxury compared to the past island), and a chuckle escaped his lips as he dropped his wicker basket onto the washing machine.

"I dunno," he said as his eyes traveled over to the garment she'd just disposed of. "I'd say that's got character."

"Oh?" Karen twisted around to pick the jacket up again, holding it up against her chest to really take it in. She waved one arm at the man, one of the zippers on the sleeve waving about with it. "Wanna try it on? I think it might just fit you."

Chuckling in appreciation of her quick return fire, Sawyer ambled on over, dropping down to his knees and pulling the shirt over. He was man enough to handle a shirt like that without running in the other direction. Probably. Draping it across his chest, he raised a brow and gave the woman a look, as though asking for her appraisal.

"Probably fits my size if I work at it," he admitted, "but I don't think it's my color. Makes me look like one huge blob of yellow 'n orange."

For both their sakes, he tossed the shirt back over to the reject pile.

"I'll tell you one thing though, and I don't mean any offense, but remind me never to go shoppin' with you," Sawyer adds good-naturedly, nodding his head over at the various piles of clothing.

The face Karen made when he held it up said more than she could, and she wasn't sure if she was happy that her first impression of the jacket was right. "And with the amount of sunshine here, we definitely don't need more orange around." Her own skin had tanned over the years, and her freckles had deepened along with it.

"I'm not usually like this," she promised, waving at the piles. "I'm just trying to put together a collection. A couple of friends and I are starting up a boutique. No more dealing with the clothes box if you don't have to."

"Looks like somebody's having a good clothes box day," Brodie said as he entered the room and saw the fucking monstrosity that the box had given Karen. It looked like those fucking dopey orange vests that crossing guards wore.

"I'm not so sure of that," Karen said, holding up a pair of pants she'd just pulled out. "I think these might fit you."

Still new to the island, Annie had yet to rebuild even a fourth of her wardrobe, and hard-pressed as she was to borrow anything of Britta's, she was left at the constant mercy of the clothes box. Uneasy as the sudden lack of responsibilities had left her, she busied herself today with yet another trip down to the basement, unsurprised to find that she wasn't alone. It was rare, if ever, that she got the box to herself, and rather than view it (as she initially had) as unfortunate (god forbid someone else be around to witness her embarrassment), she had learned to be relieved at not having to suffer it alone. "Hi," she waved, smiling as she stepped down from the last step. "I'm Annie."

"Hi," Karen replied, startled at first by such a cheerful greeting right off the bat. "I'm Karen. Nice to meet you."

She shifted on the floor, stretching her legs out as she made room. "Feel free to go through this pile," she said, gesturing to the small one she was saving for the boutique. "It's all good stuff I've found so far."

"Oh, thank you, that's so sweet of you." Eagerly, Annie made her way across the room, pausing just before reaching the smaller pile. Protruding just slightly from the much larger mound were what appeared to be a simple pair of nude tights, which she had been hoping to acquire since day one. "Are you sure there's nothing good over here?" She asked, leaning in to gently pull them free. Only when she held them up before her did she see that they were not, in fact, the tights she had been waiting for. "Oh, gross!"

"Yeah," Karen said, having had the same reaction Annie did when she'd figured out those tights. "Those are definitely ones to burn or something, I don't know why they even exist."

"Wait, I'll totally take that one!" said Jess as she arrived at the clothing box, clean sheet slung over her shoulder and ready to take a quick look before heading home. But lest she appear to have bad taste even for the island, she added, "I've been meaning to pick up some spare zippers to keep around home for repairs. That one should do me for, like, a year."

Karen laughed as she reached over to pick the jacket back up, sure that was just about the only use it could have. "It's all yours," she said, handing it over. "If we even had cars I'd suggest using the rest of it to make a crossing guard vest, or something. Maybe the IPD can wear strips of it at night."

"Maybe one of our intrepid hunters could use it," said Jess, immediately thinking of Dean and his bow and arrow and wondering how he'd react to this. "Unless orange enrages dinosaurs. That would be bad."

"Oooh, that's an idea," Karen said, looking back over at the bad pile and all the various neon-colored clothing in it. "But yeah, I'm pretty sure even dinosaurs would be enraged by this fashion. Or maybe they're all just lucky enough to be colorblind."

The clothes box was a necessary evil. It wasn't all bad all the time, but it wasn't exactly her best friend either. There was a time there in the beginning where all it did was give her giant ugly jumpers and tartan everything, but it had mostly given that up. It was better really.

Nudging the pile of clothes with the toe of her shoe as she passed, Amy laughed and shook her head. "Don't tell me; the thing is acting up again, isn't it?" she asked with a smile before moving to kneel next to the box. "Figured it could only be so nice for so long before trying to punish us all."

"It's always bad," Karen said, reaching over to pat Utica when she stirred in her sleep. "I secret is to have a lot of patience, and to have your day be so boring you can afford to spend it sitting in front of a cardboard box."

"Hm, that's actually a really good way to do it," Amy agreed with a nod. Being a rush meant that there was less time to go through all the bad to find something half-decent. Those were usually the times that ended in her wearing jumpers that had kittens on them. Definitely foul. Adjusting herself so that she was in a position to be comfortable for the long haul, she laughed. "What's the theme today? Sheer polyester? Patterns galore? Combo of both?"

"I think it's going with the combo." She'd turned back to the box, and the next thing that came up was a pink flannel shirt. Cocking her head to the side, Karen considered it.

She then held it up for inspection. "What do you think? Yea or nay?"
