Some days, he thinks it hurts more than his thumb, still strapped up and healing in the bone. For he first few days, he searched for her and the baby, but, pretty soon, he stopped searching. There isn't much left of her at all; nothing to really remember her by. He searches her house from top to bottom, lies down on her bed for a while but doesn ( Read more... )

Kate never really...got Baze and T.J. She has no claim to Baze, at all, so the jealousy she felt always made her feel uncomfortable. But she didn't get the late nights and the long talks and the feeling that there was something beyond friendship going on.

But she's lost friends and even if she doesn't understand, she's not going to begrudge him some comfort. Even if she's never quite sure where the line is with them.

"Andrew McCarthy was so dreamy back then," she murmurs, settling down beside him.

"I've never really got what girls mean when they say dreamy," he says, conversationally, shifting on the couch to make room for her, offering her some of his blanket. "It's kind of a wussy way of talking about it."

"It means pretty in an unattainable way," she informs him, slipping close. "I used to fantasize about all the great heroes like that. I'd pretend I was Juliet or Cleopatra or Viola and I was having these epic romances with tragic endings. Luckily, I figured out that kind of thing is just a pain in the ass in real life."

"I am pretty sure that nobody's ever called me dreamy," says Baze, with a little roll of his eyes, dropping his arm arounher shoulders on the back of the couch. He grins at her. It feels good.

"You're such a fucking actress. Jesus."

"Hey, honey," Saffron said, leaning over to press a kiss to Baze's forehead before she settled in right up next to him, curling her legs up beneath her. "What's this one? I haven't seen this."

"Hey, Helen," he says, smile tugging at the corner of his mouth when she sits next to him. He drops his arm around her shoulders in a friendly way. "This? St Elmo's Fire. It's a fucking classic."

"A classic, huh? Well, I reckon I'd better watch it then," she replied, though her focus was more on the man next to her than on the screen. "How're you doing?"

He shrugs; surely the blanket and the terrible movie gives her a hint on that. He clears his throat.

"Pretty beat up. I suppose I ought to be glad it wasn't Lux, right?"

Hugo likes the rec room. It's pretty good for recreation. Even if it does sort of remind him a little too much sometimes of the Hatch, with the furniture and the everything else. Anyway, he likes it, and sometimes people are there, and sometimes people aren't - he's not sure which he prefers.

Today, someone's there. Someone he doesn't recognize. But anyone who's curled up on a couch and willingly watching St. Elmo's Fire can't be too bad, so Hurley moves over toward him, just close enough to drift a shadow over his face as he looks down and says, "I'm still not sure I really buy Demi Moore as crazy-coke-habit-chick, but Rob Lowe's cool."

"Rob Lowe's not just cool, dude," says Baze, looking up from the screen for a moment. "Rob Lowe's a fucking legend. Unfortunate sexual escapades aside, of course. Brother's made serious errors, obviously, but he's made good since. Even if Brothers and Sisters was kind of awful."

Hurley decides that's as good as an invitation - that the guy is starting up the conversation he was admittedly kind of forcing, instead of just being like, go away. So he leans forward, arms resting on the back of the sofa, staring at the screen. You appreciated old familiar movies more when you'd had to deal without for so long. You could only golf the same course so many times before it started to seem a little old, but somehow a favorite movie always seemed different, every re-watch.

"So why the 80s movies?" he asked. Maybe the guy has reasons like Hurley's, maybe not. But he wants to know other people's business; it's just the way he is.

"There's something really comforting about this kind of movie," he says, because Baze has always fallen into conversation easily. "Shit goes down, the world falls apart, but everything's alright in the end."

Kind of the same reason he loves Starship.

"Which one's this again?" Rory asked as he wandered into the room. He had lived through the 80s once; it seemed to him he should remember all this. But then there was a lot to remember.

He perched himself on the arm of the sofa, in wait of an answer, not intending to hang around for more than a few minutes, but glanced to his side to see Baze looking... well, a little worse for wear. Rory frowned and immediately forgot his previous question. "You alright?"

"The one where Demi Moore's a crazy drug addict," he says, tugging his blanket more firmly up over himself. He takes a moment to think about what Rory's just said to him.

"Not really, man."

Blankets made sense in Leadworth, where even if it were sunny there could be a nip in the air. But on the island, Rory rarely saw them around people's shoulders unless they were sick.

He popped down from the arm to the sofa proper, ignoring the movie. "What happened?"

"My best friend's gone," he says, and there seems to be no point in lying about it, and there seems to be no point in holding it back. "TJ. And her baby. All gone."
