Some days are better than others. He's been spending a lot of time alone, no humvee to lie under, but he's been at the hut that he shared with Nate whent hey were together, methodically cleaning things out and stowing things away. He's putting their life together away because, as far as he can see, there's no other way to go on. He's got Terry ( Read more... )

At first, well, at first it's just Danny's eyes playing tricks on him. He figures it out soon enough and can't help the disappointment that sits in his stomach in knowing it's not one of Five-O, it's just someone else. Someone he's never met. "Is this a thing?" Danny calls out to the guy. "Or is this like, some kind of art? Half-Naked Man Reads in Grass. I have seen New Art, I could sell you for a lot of money," Danny advises, very seriously.

"...It's not a thing and it isn't art," says Brad, craning his neck to look over his shoulder, eyebrows raised. "It's just a book. I've got a shirt I could put on if I'm making you uncomfortable, man."

His face is straight but, maybe, he's trying to smile.

"Nah, no, it's fine," Danny dismisses, even though there's just something about this whole situation that feels strangely comfortable and familiar. "Seriously, this happens to me more often than you think. Not the book part in the grass, but..hey, I'm good, I'm fine," he promised, taking a couple steps closer because yelling all this would be even more awkward.

"I feel much better knowing that," says Brad, deadpan. He pushes up to sitting, leaving Nate's book in the grass and reaches for his shirt, anyway. "I haven't seen you around," he says.

He's Recon.
He notices everything, eventually.

Saffron was barefoot, her dress so long it skimmed the tops of the grass as she made her way slowly over to where Brad was sprawled with a book. "Hey, honey," she said, not sitting down just yet on account of it wasn't exactly an easy task just then so she wanted to make sure he was all right with her being there first. "Want some company?"

"Absolutely."

Wiping his eyes with his wrist, he drops Nate's book in the grass and pushes to his knees, offering his hand to her to help her sit, if she wants to. He gives her a smile. It almost touches his eyes.

"How're you holding up?"

She took his hand with a grateful smile, using it and his strength to lower herself to the grass, though she didn't escape the painful twinge in her ribs. "On the mend," Saffron replied, her voice still scratchy but improving daily. "It's getting less and less painful to breathe, which is nice. How about you?"

"I'm tired," he admits, seeing no point in lying about it. "All the time. And I miss him, all the time. But I'll come through it."

Marines make do. They don't know how to do anything else. It's in the blood and bone. It's what makes them.

"But it's hard."

Even if Terry isn't intimately familiar with Brad, she'd have recognized him by tattoo alone. He makes for a pleasant sight after spending a few hours in the council office and she sits next to him, not caring if she disturbs his reading. "Hello, love."

"Hey," he says, wiping his face as he sets Nate's book down in the grass. He shifts, dropping his head into her lap and closing his eyes. He reches behind him, fingers curled against her thigh.

"How're you?"
He's tired of talking about how he is.

"I'm fine," Terry replies, leaning over to press a kiss to his shoulder, her hand smoothing over his back. "Not much has been going on, lately. Just new arrivals coming in to the office."

"Tell me about them," he says, his head fitting comfortably against her thigh, her hand resting against his back like it was meant to go there. He's aware of the wedding rings in his pocket. He always is, these days.

"I found Nate's book," he says, on an afterthought. "It's weird. Everything about it."

If Rose Tyler's got one thing to do on a desert island, it's finally getting to all those well someday when I have time sorts of things - things like running every day, things... well. Sort of things like watching her diet, although right now it's mostly watching how much fruit she can eat and wishing desperately for chips. Reading, although she's finding out more and more that she doesn't actually like reading-- and half the time, somebody else is watching something on the projector so it's not like she can sit and watch telly til her face falls off ( ... )

"Yeah," says Brad, wiping his face with his hands as he sits up. he hasn't seen her before but that doesn't mean anything at the moment. He's so wrapped up in his own world that he barely notices himself most of the time.

"Just...this place throws up strange things sometimes."
