If there was anyone in a position to know when someone was gone or not, Keith supposed it would be him; they were one of the first points of call, after all. Someone apparently not around? Get the IPD to investigate. Not everyone did it that way, but it happened ( Read more... )

I'd knocked and I thought I'd heard something to suggest that I could come in. When I did, though, I realized I'd stumbled onto something private. Still, the empty glass clinking against the full bottle was all the confirmation I needed.

I looked at the bottle, feeling bittersweet. "So, he's gone, is he, sir?"

"'fraid so," Keith said, with a grim and sympathetic smile. He held up the glass. "Want to raise an empty glass to it?"

I met his smile. "If I had a glass, yes. Probably the whole IPD will want to. Should I borrow yours?"

"Go for it," Keith said, putting it down and sliding it gently across the desk. "Sybil and Young Sam are gone, too, so, that's something."

Maladicta trudged back into the IPD office looking deeply and quietly displeased, and a little weary. She shucked her jacket and was ready to throw it onto a chair when she spotted Mars with The Bottle, and froze.

She looked from it to him.

It was going to hit all of them to varying degrees, but Keith had to acknowledge that he'd been closer to some than others. Those were the ones he wasn't looking forward to, and look, there one was.

He sighed, and suggested, "Take a seat."

Maladicta instinctively did not. She was very good at following orders. She was better at circumventing then. She definitely had it in her to disobey them flat out, and the only instinct stronger than her fight one at the moment was flight. After a long, indecisive moment, she walked into the room and sat.

Keith scrubbed a hand over the top of his head, frowning.

"It's bad news," he said, "obviously. I've looked, and I have to call it. Vimes is gone."
