sketti! [meal post]

Oct 04, 2010 17:38

Susan kept tonight's dinner simple, since Rickon was in A Mood and one certain way to defuse it was to prepare his favourite food for supper--spaghetti. He could not quite say the word as yet, however, so it came out sketti more often than not. There were two sorts of sauce, one with boar sausage meatballs and one that was strictly vegetarian, so ( Read more... )

"I don't think you can actually expect him to stop when it amuses him that much."

Of Susan's two children, Niko much preferred Helen's quiet nature to Rickon, but he was fond of both of them in their own ways. Rickon was old enough to have a personality and while it was a little exhausting, it was charming in its own way.

He typically took his meals in the Compound and seeing Susan there was a pleasant surprise; Niko usually had to make the trek down to Snow House to see her.

"Decided to let the rest of the citizens share the wealth?" he asked, nodding toward the spread of food.

"Every Monday," Susan replied, looking up from Rickon's messy face with a smile. "The menu was Rickon's idea--at least, this part of it was. He would have pasta every day if I let him."

"Sketti," Rickon said happily, and picked a noodle off the table to suck into his mouth. Susan just looked despairingly at him and wiped his face with a napkin.

"He almost pronounces it correctly," Niko mused, giving Susan a quick smile before looking back at Rickon. "Spaghetti, Rickon," he said patiently, not really expecting him to pronounce it correctly.

"Sketti," Rickon repeated. "More sketti."

"What should you say, Rickon?" Susan reminded him. She picked up his bowl and waited to see if he'd remember the smidgen of manners she'd attempted to teach him.

Rickon appeared to think about it for a minute, then gave her a sauce-covered smile. "Peese?"

Susan kissed his forehead, which hadn't yet been stained with sauce, and went to the counter to put a little more spaghetti in his bowl. "Can I get you anything while I'm over here?" she called over her shoulder to Niko.

'Gross' is Rachel's first thought, quickly followed by 'Hey, I know that baby.'

"I know you," Rachel announces, smartly going with the second thought as she points at Rickon's happy face. "Little dinosaur warrior."

"Wachew!" Rickon remembered her quite well from their adventure in the jungle, and he bounced up and down happily in his chair. He refused to sit in a 'high chair' and so Mother had sat him in a regular chair on a stack of books pulled from the shelf. He liked this much better.

Susan looked up from cutting up Rickon's spaghetti for him. "Dinosaur--oh, goodness, were you with Rickon in the jungle?" She hadn't known exactly who Rickon had been with and wished she did so she could thank them for keeping him safe.

"One of a few, but I'm not the flying robot, unfortunately," she says, giving the kid a wave. She kind of hopes that 'rachel' is the only word he learned from her. "I'm Rachel. He was a good baby, all things considered."

Rickon waved happily, but Susan got up from her chair and hugged the other woman. "Thank you so much for looking after him," she said, letting go. "I know he couldn't have been... very easy, especially wet and hungry. But I'm so glad he came back in one piece, and I'm very grateful that you kept an eye on him."

Last week of school, last week of school.

Felicity was very nearly skipping into the kitchen. It wasn't that she didn't like school, she very much enjoyed it, but it was nice to have a bit of a long break.

She stopped when she saw Rickon with spagetti sauce all around his mouth and fingers, and looked from him to Susan.

"Do you need any help?" She couldn't really comment on the mess Rickon made of himself, so she didn't-she just thought he may be especially a handful at the moment, since he usually was.

ooc:that scene just brought back memories

"Oh no, we're all right," Susan said, wiping at Rickon's face. "He's just a bit of a mess when it comes to his favourite food. But thank you for offering. Please do help yourself to some dinner."

"I would think that's the same with all children his age." She said, giving him a small wave. "Except for my sister, Nan, but she was always proper." Even when Nan was Rickon's age, she always seemed repellent to getting dirty.

Felicity was more interested in talking right now than eating, since she rarely got to talk with Susan except during Monday dinners.

"How is little Helen, anyway?"

"Oh, she's quite well," Susan answered, and nodded to the playpen. "Sleeping rather soundly, just there. She usually sleeps through dinner and wakes just in time for the washing-up."
