Nick hadn't been joking whenever he told Karen that the clothes box had apparently decided to wage war on him. It happened, every so often; it was a hazard of life on the island, after all. You never knew when the bookshelf was going to do nothing but give you books on families and children and, on one memorable occasion, shelves full of Chicken ( Read more... )

Sunny was playing Secret Investigator, creeping around corners and spying on people. She dropped her persona, however, when she saw the sparkly things surrounding Nick.

"Are you going to wear that?" she asked, holding her magnifying glass up to the shirt.

Some of Nick's irritation at the clothes box slipped away as Sunny approached. "Well, no, honey, I don't think I will be," he said, pushing a few more of the glittery shirts her way. "I don't think that pink's really my color."

"How do you know what color is yours?" Sunny asked, and took the shirts, inspecting them for cuteness.

Nick contiuned to dig through the box, although by now, he was beginning to think that this was yet another pointless excursion. "Usually it's a color you wear a lot, or one you think you look good in." He picked up one of the shirts -- bright pink with a dolphin and a rainbow on it -- and held it up to his chest. "Like, I don't know about you, but I don't think this really works for me, yeah?"

"You ever think that maybe the clothes box is trying to tell you something?" Brodie commented, noticing all the sparkly shit that it was spewing at him. Not that he REALLY thought Karen's boyfriend was gay, but if the box was having fun, then there was no reason Brodie couldn't join in.

Nick looked over at Brodie, eyebrows raised. "I think it's trying to tell me that I'm an eight-year old girl," he said, dropping another bedazzled unicorn shirt onto the floor. "Why? You have a different suggestion?"

"Who am I to question the will of The Box?" Brodie asked with a shrug. "It says you need to start wearing unicorn shirts, then maybe you need to start wearing unicorn shirts. I bet Karen'll think it's hot. Don't chicks like that Lisa Frank shit?"

"The will of The Box," Nick muttered under his breath, shaking his head. "Nah, I think I'm going to have to subvert the box's will, this time." He pushed past a handful of purple items, hoping to see something, anything, that didn't look like it came out of a Disney movie. "If Karen wants me in unicorn shirts, that's... an interest I haven't heard of yet."

"No, it's still kinda funny," Karen piped up from her spot over by the washing machines. She knew how hard it was to find decent clothes, sure, but that didn't mean it stopped being funny when the clothes box decided Nick needed a little more pink in his life.

"Hey, now," Nick said, leaning back on his heels, away from the box, "I'd like to see you come over here and try finding something decent." Just for emphasis, he wadded up a pair of unicorn socks and tossed them at Karen. "I feel like I've been at this forever."

"Just keep trying, honey," Karen said, kicking the socks back his way when the fell near her. "Something non-sparkly will show up eventually."

Nick moved out of the way, letting the socks continue to bounce away. Maybe someone who loved unicorns would find them, later. That someone would not be Nick. "Eventually. I don't like the sound of that." The next thing he pulled out of the box was a hot pink tank top with rabbits on it. "I mean, would anyone really be able to take me seriously in this?" he asked, holding the shirt up against his chest.

Glancing up from folding her clothes, Claudia laughed seeing the sparkly shirt dude had just pulled from the box. "Oh, dude, c'mon! That is a totally kickass shirt! Maybe the box will toss in a tiara for you as well!"

Nick laughed at that as he set the shirt aside. "You know, I wouldn't be surprised, at this point." Really, most of the time, he thought that the island couldn't surprise him any more, but he also didn't want to tempt fate. "Maybe it's gearing up for Halloween."

She chuckled, tossing her folded shirt ontop of her stack of folded clothes. "Could be that," she said with a nod of her head. "If it gives you hooker boots though, you should totally kick it. It might be trying to get you to go as a Pussycat Doll or something."

Nick plunged his arm into the box, hoping that maybe something good was lurking in the bottom. "Nah," he said absently, "I've had enough of hookers to last me a lifetime."

He paused, then, arm still submerged in the box, and realized exactly how wrong that sounded, and blushed a little. "Not -- nothing like that, I mean," he said quickly. "I worked in Las Vegas, pre-island. That's all."
