There were afternoons on the island where Lex liked nothing better then to sit and play with piano in the rec room. It was relaxing in a way nothing else was and best of all, it reminded him of times with his mother, sitting beside her on the bench as she practiced with him.

Today his fingers were picking out An American in Paris. It was a bright ( Read more... )

"I preferred your playing to the other song," James replied. He'd been ... well he'd been pretending to look at the bookshelf despite having no intention of reading a book. It was a cover for snooping about the island, today the compound rec room, trying to find something of value to the Boss. Thus far, his search hadn't revealed anything of interest.

"It has a catchy tune, but it won't stand the test of time." Even though James was more partial to rock than classical, there were just some things that he knew.

"Oh! I know you from the club," James exclaimed suddenly, inappropriately.

At the new voice, Lex lifted his head and gave the young man a small, sardonic smile. "Thank you. I'd like to think Gershwin would always trump drivel like that." He still was both angry and upset at the jukebox's choice but he easily hid it away behind his Luthor facade.

"Your Helen's new doorman." Lex stated with a small nod at the recognition. "I know she's very thankful for new help." After a small glare at the jukebox, he began playing again, lightly and without the energy as before, more distracted then anything else. "I'm not sure if I introduced myself yet. Lex Luthor."

"Hello Lex," he replied. He already knew the name. He had a list of people who worked at the club and people who were allowed into the club without having to sign up for hours. "I'm James since we're giving introductions."

It was moments like these that really made him miss Jessie and Meowth and the motto. They would have made a dramatic entrance and everyone would know who they were. Or perhaps not. Whatever suited their cover story maybe.

"Do you sing or play anything else?"

They had that in common then. Lex had asked Helen who the new doorman was the day he'd come to work the downstairs bar and hadn't seen Harris at the door. Joey had kept him busy the rest of the night. He often wondered how the man functioned in normal society. But it still didn't hurt being polite.

"No, I'm afraid it's just the piano. It was my mother's retort to my father teaching me fencing. Yourself?"

"That is an... interesting song," Anatoly remarked as he cautiously peered into the rec room, bearing two cups of tea. He'd heard the song halfway down the hall, and while he didn't think Lex would willingly sing something like that, well - stranger things had happened, after all. "I see the jukebox is in fine form today."

He headed over to the piano to give Lex his cup, after first bending to press a soft kiss to his cheek. "Your tea, Sascha."

Lex almost sighed with relief when he heard Anatoly's voice over the jukebox and lifted his head with a soft, if tried, smile. "Oh yes. It's in a fine vindictive mood." He turned his head for a full kiss as he took the cup. "Thank you, Tolya."

"If only it could be set on fire," Anatoly muttered as he joined Lex on the bench. "That would certainly brighten my mood. But no, I should not say that and give it more ideas."

He shook his head then took a sip of tea, savoring the taste. He'd cut back on the sugar when filling Lex's cup, but his own had all the sugar he could stand and then some.

"Jukebox aside, how have you been?"

"That would be too merciful." Lex muttered in reply, with a smile for Anatoly as he joined him. "And I've been..."

Before he could finish, the jukebox changed it's tune. To someone who sounded like Anatoly singing about panda's having sex. "Oh for fuck's sake!" Lex growled as he dropped his head to the keys of the piano again.

A good pool player and a good musician. And possibly a fictional character. But after spending the afternoon with Hawkeye, she realized that isn't such a big deal around here, even if it was personally galling to think about. The guitar was catchy in a Comedy Central kind of way, but it was the piano she looked at, and the man sitting at it.

"Play it again, Sam?" She leaned against the door frame, giving him the opportunity to invite her in or kick her out. With the look on his face it could go either way she figured.

Unfortunately, Lex knew for a fact he was a fictional character. A very famous one at that. In a couple different format. It was enough to make his head hurt.

When he heard the familiar voice, that wasn't his own, Lex lifted his head and gave Trixa a relieved smile. "Gladly. I was playing Gershwin but I could be persuaded to play something else."

"Player's choice, I'm not picky and you seem to be pretty good."

She pulled up a chair and settled into it, watching the lonely pianist.

"How long you been playing?"

"Hmmm well then." After a moment's consideration, Lex began playing some Sinatra. Jazz was always calming for him. "I've played since I was a child. It was a trade off between my parents. My mother got to teach me piano if my dad got to teach me fencing. Do you play?"

Kon had Bart in a headlock. It was probably beginning to be a normal scene, since he was determined to spend as much time around his best friend as he could. Part of it was to avoid Cassie and part of it was because he was almost afraid that Bart would vanish like he had last time.

"Do you give?"

He stopped when he heard a familiar voice - singing? - and changed direction so that they would continue into the rec room. He had someone to introduce Bart to, now. Once he gave in.

"You're cheating. I don't know how, but you totally are," Bart said, trying to get enough of a grip to throw off the headlock. But with Kon dragging him who knows where, he couldn't find an advantage. "Oh, I see what you're doing. Adding torturing your best friend to your daily activities?"

He groaned as Kon tightened the grip just enough to be painful, but nowhere near damaging. "All right, uncle! You win!"

Lex was just lifting his head again when Kon walked in with someone who looked vaguely familiar under his arm. He supposed this was the new Mr. Allen Anatoly had told him about. With a sigh and ignoring the headache the song was causing, Lex prepared himself for another run in with someone who would think he's a clone or look at him like he was going to take over the island.

"Who is your friend Kon?" He asked in an as even a tone as he could manage.

"More like 'father' and mine, not yours," Kon replied, letting Bart go and pushing him away with a laugh. "And I'm pretty sure that torturing my best friend has been on the list since, like, forever. It's right there next to: 'Make fun of Mr. Sarcastic'." Kon gestured at Bart with a grin. "This is Bart Allen. I'm sure you remember the old one. This is apparently him plus a few months, minus any memories of the island."

He looked over at Bart and there was repressed laughter sparkling in his eyes. "Bart, this is..." He let the moment stretch out for a minute, although Bart had probably already figured it out already. "Dun, dun, dun. My father, Lex Luthor."

It had been a long day. Trying in ways that Sam didn't even want to admit too, though they'd be pretty obvious given the situation. Cori was still crying, but not nonstop, and Sam had taken a break to head to the Compound, get himself some quiet time and a little coffee. Maybe a shower. Sleeping seemed like some kind of screwed up betrayal, a weakness on his part, letting Cori down somehow, so he avoided his own hut and his own bed.

Lost in his own thoughts, he barely noticed the song on the jukebox but did note the discordant jangle of keys. Coming into the rec room, coffee mug in hand and bags starting under his eyes, Sam frowned at the back of Lex's head. "You okay, dude?"

Lex looked up at Sam with a wounded expression then glared at the jukebox. He sighed before replying, "Yes, I'm fine. Just lamenting the fact that I can destroy that piece of machinery for interrupting my Gershwin with vulgar shit." He didn't bring any attention to the fact it was his voice coming out of the jukebox.

Instead, he frowned slightly and cocked his head at Sam. "Are you sure I shouldn't be asking if your okay?"

Having never heard Lex sing, it didn't click immediately in Sam's head to connect the man and the sound on the jukebox. His image of Lex, mildly tainted as well by the classic pop culture representation of him, was too disparate from the image of him singing that song.

He did frown for a second though, staring at the jukebox, before he shook himself out it with a dismissive, slight wave of his hand to Lex. "I'll get over it. Just been a long night. Had some.. family issues."

Raising his eyebrows at 'family issues,' Lex asked simply, "Should I ask or would you rather I didn't?" He was perfectly fine either way, but he didn't want to pry where he wasn't wanted. Sometimes.
