When that stupid box in the basement had given Kate ballet slippers only two days after her arrival, she'd rolled her eyes and tossed them into the bag she'd been filling with clothes at the time. She'd found tiny shorts and tights in the best patterns ever. Even better than she'd been able to get back home. And there was no shortage of tank tops in bright colours, but the slippers pissed her off. Just a little.
At least they weren't pointe shoes, which she didn't think she was ready for yet, but they still pissed her off.
She didn't think of them as a gift or whatever. She saw them as a reminder that her mom hasn't seen any of her recitals in the past few years. She'd always been too stressed. Instead, Kate had gotten Buck or Alice or, on one especially memorable night, T, who had then hit on every single male in the room, including the fathers of the other dancers.
She didn't want the stupid slippers and she didn't want to think about her mom ruining pretty much everything.
Two weeks later, though, she was standing in front of what looked like a dance studio, the slippers slung over her shoulder. She wasn't about to join a class or try to become some kind of teacher, but maybe she missed dancing. Maybe. And the nice thing about the island was that Buck wasn't here to beat the crap out of anyone, which was usually the quickest way to ruin an otherwise pretty good recital.
Sitting down, Kate kicked off her sandals and began to pull on the slippers, wrapping the ribbon around the back of her ankle and tying it carefully.
[Find her outside River's studio preparing to go in or inside, already dancing.]
