There was a man who had found himself in paradise. It was everything he'd hoped for, dreamed of, and worked toward. He had a girlfriend wrapped around his finger and a general life of ease. He should be happy...but he wasn't ( Read more... )

"You son of a bitch." His arrest wasn't more than two weeks ago and Freddie didn't care. Here he was, sure he was about to get arrested again, because he was not going to stop until Patrick was beat to within an inch of his life. He stood in the doorway to the kitchen, no doubt in his mind who it was that had given Maureen those bruises. Never mind that he was the cause, it was Patrick who had decided a beating was the necessary solution to finding out your girlfriend had cheated. And if he didn't know...it was that much worse.

"Please, I almost dare you to try to deny that you hit her."

Patrick wasn't about to deny it, but he wasn't going to admit to it, either. He'd told her he was sorry...that was enough.

"What do you care?"he asked placidly. "Are you the one fucking her?"

"I thought that was supposed to be you," Freddie shot back before the tinge of guilt could get in the way. The guilt no longer had anything to do with Patrick as a person at all. It had to do with the fact that he'd slept with someone else's girlfriend. "But apparently you're doing a hell of a lot more than that."

"She cheated on me with someone, Freddie...and you're the one living in her spare room," he replied smoothly. He studied the man closely, looking for any hint that he was right. Any twitch, any blush, any sliding glance. Maureen wasn't the first girl who'd dallied and Patrick had always found out. He'd known about Dudley Douchebag...even if Angie had thought he was an idiot.

Anyone else walking into the kitchen just then might have, at least at first, thought the guy was Jack Harkness on account of just how alike they looked. Saffron, however, didn't make that mistake for even a moment. She knew Jack too well for that.

She hadn't spoken to him yet, but she knew of him. How could she not, when this guy was the reason she'd lost Maureen at the club? "So how long did it take for you to get completely sick of folks mistaking you for Jack?" she asked conversationally, shooting him a little smile as she headed to the fridge in search of juice.

"A little less than a week," Patrick chuckled. He recognized the woman from the club. Helen. the one he'd made sure Maureen was no longer around.

"I'm Patrick. I don't have much in common with Jack beyond the face."

"Nice to meet you, Patrick. I'm Helen," Saffron said, before turning briefly away to get a glass from the cabinet. She fixed Patrick with a playfully stern look, one eyebrow raised, looking for all the world like she wasn't actually bothered and was completely joking with him. "I think I should be a little angry with you, Patrick. My club isn't the same without Maureen."

"I'd say sorry, but I like that the whole island isn't looking at my girlfriend's tits," he said, not sounding sorry in the least. "Maureen's a big girl...she could have chosen the club over me. I'm glad she didn't, though."

He hadn't thought for a minute that Maureen would choose to work when it was a matter of Patrick or the job. Love was a powerful manipulator.

"Jack," Delirium said happily, hugging the man with one free hand from behind. Her body shifted, tensed when she realised that this wasn't Jack- he smelled wrongWrongWRONG. Delirium tilted her head and frowned. "Not Jack. Not my captain. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. He's not our captain, is he Daniel? No, no he's not."

Delirium patted the Not-Captain on the head as Daniel hid shyly in her arms. Celia, unlike her brother, was bravely venturing forth and looking like she might bite Not Jack's leg.

It was the crazy bitch and she had kids. Ugh. Patrick squirmed away from Delirium and sidestepped the little girl. His skin was crawling at her touch and he struggled to keep from looking totally disgusted.

"No. We've been through this, lady. I'm not Jack."

"I'm not a lady, silly human. And I know you're not him, my captain. He's like the stars and you're just..." Delirium trailed off as she tried to find a word that captivated his essence. "Meat. You smell wrong."

Delirium smiled at him, a little too sanely as her daughter teetered over to her bored of the man.

"I'm Patrick," he told her, though he was patient about it. She had been awfully drunk the last time they talked.

"Are these your kids?"

They had to be her kids...and they were cute. Certainly not the burden on the environment here that they would have been back on Wisteria Lane.
