The things you never realize that you miss hurt the most. Because when you realize just what you've been living without, you feel the pain of it and all that time spent away crashing down on your heart at once

He lingers for a moment, just outside of her eyesight before stepping inwards. Hell, he's not sure what to think about these things. He still doesn't know what to make of the man he sees on that screen, not when he doesn't know how much they share of their past and what the future holds for him. Inevitably, though, he remembers this isn't about him and settles down beside her and offers his hand to her, just in case. "I might just be a simple country doctor, but I recognize someone needing cheering up when I see it."
He doesn't smile at all, doesn't really cheer at the joke, because what he wants to ask is delicate and he's not sure she's even going to know. Part of him needs to find out if that man went through the same crucible that he did, wants to know how well-adjusted he might be if he didn't. "Born in Georgia, went to school at Ol' Miss," he agrees, but it's just after that he's concerned about. "I ever talk about my father, where you come from?"
The smile hung around, just on the edges, like a thing forgotten to be put away as a frown grew slowly. "Not that I can remember," she replied carefully. "But we weren't the closest of friends. I think.. Christine said he'd passed? Not much else."
He paints a polite and placid smile on his face, hoping it's enough to tide her over. He's got his answer and he doesn't at the same time and he wants to know. Hell, he needs to deep down, but it won't be through Uhura. "Yeah, he did," he agrees, trying to get away from the topic. "Guess things do end up the same sometimes, no matter what."
There was something there clearly, but Uhura wasn't in the right spirits to weasel it out of him and he plainly wasn't willing to share just then. Whether he would or not one day was a question she didn't want to think about.
"Our worlds aren't that different either," she added, gently. "Jim still managed to find and harass you in both of them, as well as Spock. That's just uncanny."
"Jim's like a cat genetically hybrid-matched to a porcupine," McCoy says decisively. "Gets his claws in and just pokes you in all the damn wrong places and can rub you the wrong way, but god help you, you find it just a little adorable and can't turn him away." He pauses a moment, glancing sidewards. "I didn't say adorable," he warns. "If anyone asks."
A little laugh came hiccuping out of her, but she shook her head and pressed her fingers to her lips. "Of course not," she said. "That's not what I heard, nope."
