It's been nearly a month since she arrived on the island, and Renee has come to some conclusions. She's not dreaming - that much became obvious fairly quickly. She's not crazy; there's as much mundane here as there is fantastic, and the mix isn't something her mind could come up with. It's too... friendly, despite the freaky outfits, fictional ( Read more... )

Niko actually liked the bookshelf most days. It isn't anywhere near as specific as the books he'd kept at home and nowhere near as expansive as the library at NYU but it was serviceable and that, on a deserted island, was about all he could really ask for. He plucked a book off the shelf at random, this one about angels (oh, how wrong those books got it) and smiled at his companion.

"Did it give you what you asked for or do I need to shake it into submission?"

Renee's answering smile is small but real. "It's not bad this time, actually. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, and this is pretty good, so far." She lifts the book slightly, showing him the cover. "It's better than the bodice-rippers it keeps throwing at me." She doesn't have anything against romance novels -- she'll even read them by choice, when she's in the right mood. She just... hasn't been in that mood lately.

She nods to the book in the man's hand. "How's your selection look?"

"It could be better," Niko admitted, "But I'm all right with this. At least it's not a romance novel, like you said. I never liked those."

"I don't think there are many men that do." She shrugs a little. "I don't mind them, sometimes, but..." Her gaze flickers away. "Not right now." She can't read a love scene without flashing back -- to Jack, to Vlad. She shivers a little, rubbing her arm as though cold.

Mustering a smile, she looks back at her tall companion. "I'm Renee," she introduces herself, offering a hand to shake.

Renee glances up, smiling a greeting. "Hello."

She nods towards the bookcase. "If you're thinking about trying your luck, today's a good day for it. It seems like it's being friendly."

The idea of a bookcase being friendly -- or not -- should probably faze her more than it does, she realizes idly, but of all the weirdnesses here, the semi-sentient inanimate objects bother her the least. She's dealt with enough faulty computers and junker cars that having to cajole, beat, or beg for cooperation seems fairly normal, in the long run.

Scorpion isn't the strangest name she's encountered, but it's definitely memorable. She nods to him, sitting up a little straighter in her chair. "I'm Renee. Renee Walker. It's nice to meet you."
