Many months ago, Saffron had taken an unopened bottle of Cristal, one of the last few left, and set it aside in a safe place to be used for her and Warrick's New Year's Eve celebration. But by the time that particular day rolled around her boyfriend was long gone, and so the champagne remained hidden away ( Read more... )

By the time I make it out of my small hut, I'm ready for a quiet sunset cruise in a t-shirt and PT shorts with fishing gear at my side. I might even bring back a fish for Trisha so she can tear it apart and see what makes it tick. I don't really expect to see someone at the dock, though I'm not entirely surprised. I built this dock for myself, but it's a small island, yet. "Troubles?" I ask when I get in speaking range of Helen.

David's sharp gaze turned on Web as he approached, but the bird apparently didn't deem him a threat; he stayed where he was. Saffron glanced his way to make sure she wasn't about to have to call him off, then looked up at Web with a tired smile that was little more than a quirk of her lips.

Instead of answering his question, she held out the bottle towards him. "This is our last bottle of champagne," she informed him. "Top shelf stuff. Want some?"

"I'm not sure I should be imbibing before going out on the boat, but I'm also not sure I should say no to you," I admit and set my gear down as I slowly take a seat some feet away from her, watching her curiously. "Came to watch the waves come in?" I ask tentatively, as if prodding the real answer.

"Of course you shouldn't, it's good champagne," Saffron replied, then let out a humorless laugh. "We can toast to the island, for continuing to successfully screw with us by taking folks away."

The knot in her chest tightened, and her fingers clenched tighter around the bottle as she took a slow breath. When she looked over at Web, it was with a forced smile. "What are you doing way over there? I ain't gonna bite you," she said. "Not gonna try and seduce you either."

On days he didn't have ITF, Jack still worked out. Logan thought he was insane with all the running and swimming, but Jack didn't let the bitching stop him. Detain him, maybe, but not stop him.

He surfaced near the dock and smiled as soon as he saw Helen. The smile fell, though. Between the ITF and the club, Jack knew Cuthbert and his hawk. He also knew Helen didn't just sit alone and drink and cry. When it came to the people he knew the best and cared for most, Jack was pretty smart.

He didn't bother apologizing for dripping on the dock and he didn't apologize for plopping down next to her and draping a wet arm around her shoulders.

"Bert's gone," he said softly, simply. He figured that if he was wrong, she'd correct him.

Saffron didn't give a damn that Jack was dripping wet and getting her all wet too with his arm around her. She was just glad he was there, and she turned her head to look up at him with a small nod of confirmation. "Lloyd and Alain and Sandor too," she said, her voice breaking a little, and tears burned her eyes as she leaned into him and rested her head on his shoulder.

David, for his part, simply gave a little squawk. Saffron supposed it was his way of saying hello to Jack.

"Damn it," he sighed heavily, gathering her closer. "All at once? Oh, bao bei..."

There weren't any words. They'd both been here long enough to understand that it happened and they'd both been here long enough to know that it hurt like hell. And Jack was certain that for a blow this big? That champagne was probably the best idea. It'd dull the pain for a moment- just long enough for people like them to square their shoulders and keep on going.

She let the tears roll down her face as Jack held her closer, knowing he would understand her need for a moment of weakness at a time like this. "All at once," she confirmed, a little shakily. "Lloyd told me they were all getting together last night, so they probably all disappeared together then."

The closest comparison for what Felicia spends her time idly doing would be casing. But there's nothing really steal here and if there is the challenge isn't great enough to spark any real interest.

Kicking up sand as she approaches the dock, she fights back a frown with a default of a smirk. "Drinking alone is the fastest way to get a headache," she tells the redhead. Giving people unwanted advise is the half the fun. "I'm not judging, just sharing."

David, alert as ever, swiveled his head quickly in the direction of the voice. With one graceful movement, he lifted off from his perch at the end of the dock and landed just beside Saffron, between her and the woman approaching. "Hush, Davey, everything's fine," Saffron told him softly, and he glanced back at her before turning his attention back to the woman.

"Does that mean you're offering to drink with me?" she asked, pitching her voice back to a normal volume. "It's good stuff, not questionable island booze."

Felicia has never like birds. It's nothing personal, just the cat in her and the fact that despite their nifty trick of sitting on powerlines without frying, they don't do much for her. Except maybe magpies, but that's an association thing and nothing else.

"It would be, but I'm not a girl who imposes so I was just making the suggestion."

"Well, then consider yourself invited. Come on and have a drink, as long as you don't mind cooties. I didn't bring any glasses." Saffron motioned her over with the hand holding the bottle, then glanced at David, who was still next to her. "Don't mind him. He's very well trained."
