The headache was more or less constant at the moment, but the nausea came and went. It wasn't a case of learning to live with; Charlie had done her getting used to it back in Midland before Hiro Nakamura turned up on that day the rain just wouldn't stop. She always found herself thinking more abou HIro when she didn't feel well. Once upon a time ( Read more... )

"Somethin' wrong, young'n?" Bobby had come in from the rec room, in search of a cold drink, and stopped when he saw Charlie. His brow knit together slightly as he took a look at what she was doing. "Whatever it is you're makin' there, I hope to hell it ain't food."

"Paper," says Charlie, still up to her wrists in the soggy mixture as she cranes her neck to look over her shoulder at Bobby.

"Don't suppose you want to do a girl a favour and scratch my nose, old man?"

Chuckling, Bobby went over to her. "I can do that," he said, and gave her nose a scratch. "Howsat?"

Charlie's nose wrinkled and her fingers curled into the goopy mess that she was up to her knuckles in.

She groans.

"Perfect."

That's not baking. Kate's seen some pretty weird food come out of the kitchen, but even she knows that's not for baking.

"What are you doing?" Kate asks, Sam on her hip making a very unimpressed face at what is clearly not anything for him to eat.

"Making paper," says Charlie, up to her wrists in mess so she can't reach out for Sam the way she usually would. "Bring him here so he can give his Auntie Chharlie a kiss?"

Kate obediently brings Sam over, who's itching to check out the blog of gross crap Charlie's playing in.

In lieu of a kiss, he goes for a handful of hair and coos down at the pasty goop.

"He likes your hair the best, you know. Better than Geoffrey's."

"Well, my hair is prettier than Geoffrey's," says Charlie with a broad grin. She turns her head and kisses the side of Sam's head.

It pulls her hair a little, but it's difficult to care.

I looked up from my chair. "What? What's wrong?"

Charlie huffs, blowing her bangs out of her eyes.

"Don't suppose you want to come scratch my nose for me, Pol? I might actually love you forever."

I looked at Charlie's hands, and immediately saw what the problem was. I hurried over and reached for her nose. "Here," I said, scratching with two fingers, and letting her moves guide me to where the itch was. "Better?"

If it had been anyone but Polly, Charlie might have been embarrassed by the sound that she made just then.

"You're a saint, Polly O'Keefe," she says. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

"I'm sure it'll look more like paper when you're done," he said, being reassuring even when he couldn't argue with her assessment. It did look a bit like pale shit.

"Do you want some tea, love?" he asked as he made his own way for the coffee pot.

"Thankyou, baby," says Charlie, smirking as she cranes her neck to watch him. "Tea'd be lovely, but you come here and scratch my nose for me first, would you/ lease/ Because you love me better than anyone else?"

He stopped and laughed to himself as he abandoned the mugs and walked back over to her. "Only because I love you better than anyone else," Ianto replied, scratching the tip of her nose, amused. "Otherwise you'd be out of luck."

Charlie groans in a way that's strictly undignified and wrinkles her nose.

"God, that's great. I love you, baby."

"That," says Geoffrey, "does not smell delicious. No offense. Unless it's actually supposed to be delicious, in which case I think I should be the one offended."

"It's paper pulp," says Charlie, with a grin, flexing her fingers in the mess and and then wrinkling her nose.

"If you loved me, you'd come here and scratch my nose for me."

"Does that sound like something I would do?" says Geoffrey. "Doesn't it seem more like me to just stand here and watch you squirm for a while?"

"You want me to throw a fistful of this at you?" says Charlie, eyes narrowing as she glares at him. "My aim's pretty deadly, Mister."
